Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

I keep seeing scUM fans say they just got rid of their Cooper and I had some thoughts on that.

I think they just got rid of their Earle. A class guy who didn't win enough to satisfy the machine but did everything else right. A guy who was overall competent in The Game but things had slid badly toward the end. Earle was 5-4 in The Game while LC was 6-7. Earle was more consistent and won his last game but one game over or one game under is about the same record in a rivalry game.

If you'll remember when Earle left our program was in bad shape. We just didn't have the athletes across the board that other programs had. There were a few standouts(Cris Carter, Spielman, etc) even up to the end but the overall depth of talent was sorely lacking.

At this same time scUM had Bo at the height of his powers. Late 80's early 90's scUM was rattling off streaks of B10 titles like it was going out of style and were the only consistent national power in the B10.

Then of course after the shitty way we let Earle go they go and hire a "name" coach who they thought would be the type to come in and take us to the next level. Never mind his track record of failure in rivalry games, never mind him being an outsider that doesn't "get" The Game, never mind he doesn't "get" OSU's tradition or ties to Ohio HS coaches, give him the resources at OSU and he'll dominate. Well he did well from '94-'98 but we all know how it turned out overall.

This is where I see scUM right now. They just lost a good man who wasn't winning enough(albeit by different circumstances) and to fight back against the impending mediocrity they try and make a splash with a proven outsider, ignoring several obvious blemishes on his record in their desire for the wish to become reality. IMO they are going to get a taste of where we were in that late 80's early 90's time period while we have a living legend at the height of his powers. Dick Rod does not concern me, its the guy who comes in after him to pick up the pieces that will be a problem.

Just got rid of their Cooper? They just hired him.

HTM - one thing about the recent revelation about Magee that I think should be made clear. It was not Magee himself who made the central and nastiest accusations of racism, rather it was Brown who did so. Brown being the agent to Rodriguez and Magee.

Yes, it was, but really, what's the difference? For one thing, no difference between agent and coach was ever cited when it was Brown that made the first denials out of the paper-shredding incident. What Brown said reflected on RR.

Either Magee wanted this brought to light and therefore Brown speaks for Magee, or Magee didn't want it brought up and Brown did anyway - in which case Brown, not Magee, is the one who needs to shut up (not unusual for an agent, really) and should probably be fired besides. Agents speak for their clients. When they don't, they're out of line.

Anyway, no doubt we'll hear more. Racial stuff always, always, gets followed up on - often way more than it even needs to be.

Agreed, taken from an article posted on sportsline the following quote from said agent.

For his part, Brown is promising a "bombshell" this week when he files a response to West Virginia's lawsuit against Rodriguez. Manchin and WVU president Mike Garrison, he said, will have "some explaining to do back in the state."

Doesn't this guy know when to quit? When will one of these sides take the high road and end all of this? We have gone over and over this on this thread, there will be no winners now. This has gone on too long and gotten too personal and the exchanges from one side to the other have cut too deep for either side to emerge without scars.

Also in this article the following quote is attributed to Brown

"It's definitely going to impact their program in recruiting when it comes to African-Americans,"

Not sure if he really has the capacity to think before he speaks but this speaks volumes about why these race "accusations" came to light now. Brown has betrayed his client with his actions and his conversations with the press. I find it only a slight coincidence that we hadn't heard word one out of this agent until the day RR's contract with TSUN was finalized. What is his agenda? Is he somehow trying to spin this into a wealthier contract for Magee which in turn means a larger payday for him? Not likely to happen now with the turmoil he has created.

You got there in the end - that is the difference :wink2:
Really, you and I (and most everyone else) are all on the same page here about what Brown said (thank goodness).
As for Magee - his actual utterances are about his desire to not be a face saving EEO interview to placate the BCA. (And who would want to be the token interview in such a process). That whole topic is entirely separate and distinct.

Yeah - sadly that is also too true, with truth being cast aside like yesterday's cold bath water in the process.

Here are the questions I have, now that racism allegations have surfaced.

Are we to believe that racism only raised its head when RR left WVa?

If not, and it is hard to believe otherwise, then precisely what steps did RR take to remove racism from the program?

I understood the whole racisim thing in this context to mean WVU is/was racist because they didn't give the black assistant coach a shot at the vacated HC position. I didn't take it to mean RR had done anything positive or negative in regards to racisim or that any cloud followed him(at least on this issue).

Thats just how I took it, I could be a mile off.
