Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

Meanwhile, another poster there showed that based on WAR, Marshall has been easily the most valuable reliever in all of baseball the last two seasons.

That is like being the best looking girl at Michigan.

Relievers are simply not that valuable. The difference between great and mediocre is about 1 game. The only one to put up significant WAR on a consistent basis is Mariano Rivera. He just might be the best bullpen pitcher of all time. Yet the majority of really good bullpen pitcher are simply not worth that much. They pitch 60-80 innings. You have to be close to unhittibale to make an impact close to an everyday player or starter.

Whoah. Why the minor leaguers also? Felt good about it til I say that. The farm is getting decimated this offseason. I like the addition but it feels like we're pillaging the future again.

Assuming the two minor leaguers aren't studs remember there is talent in the low minors. The system hasn't stopped, there is just a gap at the near MLB ready level right now but that is mostly due to them all being in Cincy.

I see Walt finally deciding on who belongs as part of the core and then trading off the surplus guys for pieces we need. If the high minors are a little thin for the next 2-3 years so be it, the MLB club will be good and then about the time Votto leaves the next wave of talent will be ready to come up.

I don't think Walt does this trade without some sense that he can sign Marshall long term or is getting Chicago to pay all his salary for the two MiL guys. Something like that.

Adding Latos and Marshall is no small thing. This is actually good news concerning the Reds and I'll take what little of that I can get.

Now they just need to have a bionic implant for Arroyo's noodle arm and the Reds will be all set.

I think the goofy little bastard will be fine in the 5 spot, over paid mind you, but productive. I think last year was an aberration.

Leake and Homer not consistently fucking us is my concern for the rotation (besides health.)

I feel better about it now that I see where they might come from. I was talking to someone who thought they were coming from AAA or AA. Thats too close to being here, imo.

I would like to see them get in on some real outfield talent somewhere to handle LF. Heisey is a pretty good platoon type player and could probably play in all 3 outfield spots. If they can find a good LF to start, I would feel really good about the outfield this season. What the hell are we going to do about 3B?

I put this out over at RZ but I'm sure they'll never answer;

Carlos Lee

Big RH bat that murders lefties. Astros have said they'd pay half his salary and he's for sale, he's a FA after '12. Now he does have some kind of NTC/10-5 rights but he's been shopped so you have to think its manageable.

As I said over there, the Reds could do a lot worse in LF than spend 9 MM and send a suspect or two Houston's way.

Reds get: Sean Marshall
Cubs get: Wood, Sappelt, Torreyes.
RedsZone gets: a tightly puckered butthole.

It's funny to see some of the prospect fetishists over there react to trades. I think the Reds will come to miss Wood a little bit, but the other two guys not at all. I also think it's funny to see some evaluate every trade as "5 years of our guy for 1 year of their guy.". Nevermind that you may not actually want your guy on your MLB roster for any of those five years.

The big question is, now that Sappelt is gone, who is going to be the next Chris Denorfia?

Agreed. IMO, none of those names hurt the Reds in the long run. Wood's (somewhat) consistency will be missed, but IMO we upgraded in that department by going with a top end rotation guy in Mat Latos.

Say what you will, but the Reds have done a decent job this off-season. Now if we could just add one more piece. A LF. I'll be ecstatic, and hop right back onto the delusional Cincinnati bandwagon! :bonk:

I see it more and more as a clear case of Walt turning surplus into need which is exactly what you have to do when the farm produces extra talent.

Wood has limited value in GABP and Sappelt is just another one of our never ending supply of 4th OFers.

Maybe they over paid a little, maybe they didn't but its nothing to get worked up over.

At least Walt is finally trying. Now go fix LF, DO NOT start the season with fucking Heisey out there.

I think Wood's pitching type would fit in great at San Diego. He could be a world beater in that ball park.
