Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

10. The Reds will win the World Series. The AL has, arguably, the five best teams in baseball. The NL has that kind of parity at the top, though at a lower level of performance. In a short series, though, that doesn't really matter -- and we'll see that again in 2012, as the Reds, winners of a weak NL Central, ride the bats of Joey Votto and Jay Bruce into the World Series, where rookie catcher Devin Mesoraco and a deep bullpen dispatch Texas in six games. The Rangers, winners of 94 regular-season games and the AL West, become just the third team -- and the first since 1913 -- to lose three straight Fall Classics.

OK the insufferable optimist in me sees a couple of opportunities for improvement in Reds land.

Essentially I see a pool of players that are excess/nothing great/not a fit for this team but could have value in trade to others (my trade pool);

Heisey, Francisco, Frazier, Stubbs, Bailey, Chapman maybe Phillips if clearing his contract gives them flexibility to do something else but I'm not real keen on that. As much as he drives me nuts with his complete lack of plate discipline his glove would be hard to replace plus who didn't like Willie Mays Hayes?

So from the "trade pool" what are some of your thoughts on what we can bring back?

My first target would be Martin Prado from Atlanta and I'd give Heisey and Frazier/Francisco up so quick it would make your head spin.

Prado pro's: great OBP guy who can hit at top of order, can play LF, back up 3B and 2B. Great clubhouse guy by all accounts. Under control 2 more years but due arb raises.

Prado con's: expense, injuries from last year chronic or fluke?

Also, if I could package Stubbs and Chapman up for a big time corner OF bat it would happen and I'd slide Heisey into CF. The magic is off Chapman for me unless he proves to be a legit starter early this season. They've wasted him so far imo and his window doesn't match the teams....trade him while he's still a shiny penny.

Thoughts from some of you more pessimistic types?

Saw on MLB Network that Jocketty had offered Cordero 1yr/$7 mil. Haven't found a link to confirm it though.

I think Madsen would be a better choice.

I agree.

I've seen estimates for Madson in the 1-2 years 10/20 MM range. If that's accurate, imo, Madson is well worth 3MM more a year.

WELL worth it.

Sounds like it's too early and too much to me. There aren't many teams in the market for a closer, and the Reds might be the only ones who think the Cordero is a good idea. I've resigned myself to the fact that he'll be back. They could easily wait another 4-6 weeks and drive the price down further IMO.

I wouldn't want to see them spend Madson money on a closer unless it's a one-year deal. If the price for a closer other than Cordero is $10 million a year for multiple years, I'd rather settle for him and if he [strike]becomes[/strike] continues to be a liability they can address it via mid-season trade or from within the organization.

My prediction: They sign Cordero and he fails. They try to convert Chapman back into a starter and he fails. Chapman is the closer after the All-Star break.

Love Barry Larkin.

Grew up liking a lot of the Reds' players with my dad formerly working for their ex-minor league club the Indy Indians and Barry was one of my favorites.

Willie Green was my first favorite baseball player, however. :)

Congrats to Barry. Just an amazing SS and the Reds still haven't come close to replacing him since his retirement.

I was lucky to see him get his first hit and was one of the first autographs he signed in the bigs. Had him sign a brown paper bag because he didnt have a baseball card yet. Last time I saw him, he remembered me which was cool, but that was 20 years ago. Oh how time flies.

Barry Larkin - HOFer. 86% of the vote.
Richly deserved. And that is an understatement.

There are remarkably few professional athletes about whom an unkind word was rarely spoken.

Fewer still never to have an unkind word spoken of them.

Larkin was one of those few.

One of the classiest fellows to wear the Reds uniform - ever.
