Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

Is there any doubt?

First thing I said when I heard about the trade is, "San Diego's pitching coaches are going to unfuck Volquez' first inning issues and he's going to be awesome." That made me think they gave up too much also. I thought they could have gotten by without giving up Boxberger.

The next thing is they already pretty much have Heisey penciled in n LF, until they make a move. Versus lefties, that fucks our offense into oblivion most likely. I don't know much about Kubel but the reaction from everyone else is promising.

I was thinking keep Chapman as the closer and see if we could steal a guy like Paul Maholm/Joe Saunders for cheap in the middle to back of the rotation to add a lefty. Its looking like an all righty rotation again. I'm not sure there's a quality lefty still in FA at the moment.

Ryan Madsen is also there in FA but speculation has him maybe going to the Red Sox? Pull in Madsen and keep Chapman in the middle of the rotation, if possible, would be very nice. No giving up draft picks for Madsen either since he's Type A.

Kubel signs with the D'Backs so scratch that one. 2 years and 15 MM....they can fucking have him.

We could theoretically have a decent LF platoon with what's in house but that requires a manager with an IQ north of your average table lamp so we are a no go there.

Seems to be a fair amount of smoke coming from a Travis Wood for Sean Marshall trade rumor.

Have to see the details to know how I'll feel about it (if true).

Marshall is an elite back end bullpen guy, Wood is just nice depth but we hsall see.

The thing that worries me about Wood is he's shown how good he can be, and that's pretty damn good. He's also shown he can have some really bad outings. I would've rather given up Bailey if we deal a young SP (assuming they'd take him).

Wood is a soft tossing, flyball guy in GABP so when he's off he gets brutalized.

Marshall is a hard throwing, bat missing ground ball guy.

On the surface young SP for older middle reliever seems bad but the more I think on it the more I like it.

Marshall is just damn good. Maybe someday Wood will be more valuable but if its a 2 year window I'd consider this strongly.

RT @aplayatobenamed Wouldn't you want to keep Wood and try to get rid of Bailey?//Wood's easier to move. Bailey arb-eligible, out of options

Dear John,
Why do you think the other team is asking for Wood and not Bailey numbnuts?

First impression: I like the deal. I think Wood has reached his ceiling with the Reds, especially with his flyball tendencies. I think we saw the real Travis Wood in 2011 rather than 2010. I hope the other two minor leaguers going with him are not significant.

I'm definitely excited about the season now. These moves are the kind of thing I needed to see after last year's debacle.

Whoah. Why the minor leaguers also? Felt good about it til I say that. The farm is getting decimated this offseason. I like the addition but it feels like we're pillaging the future again.

I bet they're filler. As someone on RZ pointed out, if they were significant they'd be call prospects instead in all these rumors and reports.

Speaking of RZ, there are some people are flipping the fuck out over this, like Travis Wood was the second coming or whatever. He came close to a perfect game once, and suddenly he's baseball Jesus in spite of spending the next 1.5 seasons bouncing between here and L'ville, posting a 4.75 ERA whenever he found himself in a big league uni.

I actually saw one person get upset because Wood "could potentially be an average pitcher". Talk about a loser's mentality... Meanwhile, another poster there showed that based on WAR, Marshall has been easily the most valuable reliever in all of baseball the last two seasons.
