Reds tidbits (2010 season)

The minors are no different, they are blowing leads left and right as well...

The only guys that see able to help would be Burton and Bray who are both throwing in the minors now, and maybe Donnie Joseph late in the season. Maybe Jukich...

We have starters, Maloney, Wood, Chapman, and Volquez (when ready) that we will probably need in the pen at some point.

For me, I'd still rather bring someone up and see what they can do under the pressure. Masset et al, are proven bad commodities. Might as well see whats in the back of the cupboard before the trades start kicking off.

Wonder how the Reds would be playing if Rhodes was our closer, and Coco was our set up man... A 7th/8th inning type... To help the bullpen out. And the fact that Rhodes is just pitching lights out.

It shouldn't be a strict "use this guy in this inning" mind set. You should use your best pitcher in the highest leverage situation whether that be 7th, 8th or 9th innings. Two problems with are 1) Dusty doesn't get that 2) we only have one high leverage guy to use even if he did.

The Rays used David Price in the pen with great success as I recall. Taking MiL starters and putting them in the pen for the short run may not be the best thing in the world but its not unheard of in the annals of baseball history either.

Given the alternatives of A) watching the pen consistently implode I'm going to have to blindly go with B) anything other than A.

Reds take Yasmani Grandal at No. 12th overall.

Even though he will be worth a lot of money, i think he is worth it. A good switch hitting catcher is hard to find.

Yep, he is supposed to be demanding a bunch of money, and may have actually fallen some due to that fact (debatable). Another pick I cannot complain about. Thankfully this front office has really turned around the draft and Latin American scouting.

BTW....Reds took CF Ryan LeMarre in the 2nd round. Despite being from Michigan, this is another good pick.

Isn't that what we are doing with Fisher, Del Rosario, Odrusek?

I don't think Masset is going to struggle all year...If we can get Bray and Burton up here healthy and throwing well, that would give us options, and hopefully a stronger pen. Still don't have confidence in any one right now other than Rhodes...

I would add Micah Owings to that short list with Rhodes. He hasn't been lights out like Rhodes (who else in the league has?) but unlike everybody else in the 'pen he's been mostly useful when called upon.

I think I saw somebody mention this either here or on RedsZone, and some of you will likely cringe, but I think it's worth a shot to check in on David Weathers and see if he has anything left. He was underrated over the last few years, could possibly be brought on cheaply.

I'm reluctant to say the Reds should dip into the minors unless they're bringing up a minor league starter to take a turn at major league relief. That's one thing they haven't tried. Their top choices of minor league relievers obviously aren't working out, and I shudder to think what the guys they think less of would do given the chance. I'd even give LeCure the right of first refusal for a move to the 'pen when Bailey gets back. I think he's done well enough to get seconds on his cup of coffee.

As sad as it seems, I think he could help.

Assuming he's still alive of course.

Hell I could help...

THe worst thing to me is that I think they will think they are there other than the pen, go out and make a deal for a reliever or two and give up prospects. I would disagree on a strategy to mortgage some prospects for a couple relievers.

The options are there, it would just be better if we could get our starters a little deeper in the game, and get two legit options healthy in Burton and Bray.

And I like the idea of minor league starters as relievers, if we continue to falter.

I wouldn't mind the Reds making a serious push to get Roy Oswalt. He'd add good stability to the pitching rotation, he just needs a team that can hit, and the Reds are doing plenty of that lately. If they were to make a move like that, I'm perfectly fine with the Reds putting Harang in the bullpen.

There's no way they'll pick up Oswalt without dumping Harang in some way/shape or form.
