Reds tidbits (2010 season)

Jeebus. This is brutal. With every passing day this becomes less of a Dusty problem and more of a Walt problem.

I agree that the seeping pool of suck out in the pen isn't really his fault but as long as he is wearing your teams wrist bands you have a Dusty problem.

Just when I begin to think they're not so shitty after all, nick fucking masset has to come along and do that after Rhodes showed he was the man once again.
Fuck it, we need a new bullpen, let's go ahead and get old man Weathers up here, let's trade for somebody, but for the love of God, we need a better bullpen!:smash:

For the record, even if Masset was perfect tonight the Reds still lose 1-0. Cain is a damn good pitcher and they couldn't do much against him with the bats.

That said, Masset was still horrible. He needs to be sent wherever it is Mike Lincoln and Oliver Perez have been sent. Call it the "unabled" list.

That's true, but before Masset came you had the feeling that we were still in it, especially after Rhodes' outing, but Masset took the wind out of our sails.

We really haven't lost much ground...If at all, but lets hope we can go on another run here soon.

The pen is not as bad as they have thrown IMHO...But they need to turn it around, before things get out of hand...

BTW Burton blew the game in AAA looks like he is ready for the big league club, he is fitting in...

I wouldn't mind the Reds making a serious push to get Roy Oswalt. He'd add good stability to the pitching rotation, he just needs a team that can hit, and the Reds are doing plenty of that lately. If they were to make a move like that, I'm perfectly fine with the Reds putting Harang in the bullpen.

From what I have heard (sorry, I don't feel like searching for the articles), it is highly unlikely the Astros will trade him inside the division. His salary and Astros management's reluctance to trade inside the division makes Oswalt a pipe dream.

The thing is, they're not. We didn't really change the pen around much this year from last. It's pretty much the same guys that were one of the best bullpens in the majors (4th lowest ERA) last year, except this year, they forgot how to [censored]ing pitch! Is it too late to get Dick Pole back?

Volquez slated for rehab start | reds.com: News

Volquez to make a rehab start for class A Lynchburg on Saturday. Even though he isn't due back until late July or August, he could be thrown into the pen for the remainder of the season, and make someone like Bronson, Bailey, or even Lecure a candidate for the pen.

Bronson? He's been the second best starting pitcher the Reds have had this year.

I've been assaulted for saying this but I'll say it yet again, Volquez would be a superb closer. He has the same type stuff that Hoffman had a while back when he was dominating and the Reds rotation is pretty solid sans Bailey. Maybe Bailey will regain his late season form and turn it around the way Harang looks to be trying to do. I'd even like to see Chapman come up in a relief role maybe when he comes up until he's really ready to start. Leake has been awesome and LeCure actually looks like he knows how to pitch so I wouldnt mess them up by moving them. Arroyo is what he is. Cueto is a 3 out of 4 type pitcher. 3 decent ones and 1 what the hell was that games. Harang is a solid veteran but not dominant. Its clearly the back of the bullpen where this team is the weakest by far.

Not to mention short relief would be less wear and tear on his arm overall I'm thinking.

There is a reason starters make a lot more money than relievers. If a guy can start, and you don't have any better options, you start him. You don't stick him in the bullpen (Schmoltz being one of the very rare exceptions, and even then you could make a case he was wasted in the bullpen). As for Chapman, I would absolutely hate it if they put him in the bullpen. He is still learning to pitch, and any time spent in the bullpen in the majors is just a waste time with him.

The simple answer - there will be a crapload of bullpen arms available in about a month, and they won't cost a ton (money or prospect wise). Chapman stays in the minors and maybe you spot start him for Leake a couple of times while skipping some starts in the minors to save Chapman's arm. Volquez, assuming he comes back to form, should take a spot in the rotation. Whomever is replaced gets put in the pen, released, or they make up some injury to put him on the DL. Just be patient.

Went to the game today, another come back win. But missed the excitement.
Had to leave in the 7th when Rhodes came in because I had to go to work.

Great defense by Janish, and Philips to keep it close when Leake didn't have his best stuff.

The Reds are in first with 1.5 games up on the Cards.
