Reds tidbits (2010 season)

I can't watch the game, but why did the national pitcher get ejected? I saw on the gameday thing he hit Brandon Phillips with a pitch

I just ran down to Speedway to get an .89 slushy. Marty and the Cowboy said West must have thought it was intentional. The only reason they could think he plunked Phillips is that he went in hard on a play a couple of inning and jarred the ball loose to score a run.

Phillips, earlier in the game, ran over the Nationals' catcher at home plate and dislodged the ball; therefore making him safe at home. After dislodging the ball from the catcher Phillips proceeded to yell in exuberance and pound on his chest two to three times as he walked back to the dugout. Typical Phillips behavior.

Then the Nats pitcher did the right thing by drilling his ass.

That was a fun game. There were a lot of Reds fans at Nationals Park tonight. One of the best parts of the night was hearing Nats fans remark about how it was, "Strange that there were so many Reds fans there, but at least they were better than the Cubs and Phillies fans that invade their stadium." So true.

On Phillips: I loved seeing him run over the catcher. I actually don't mind his punk behavior either. I think it's good to see a little bit of swagger once in a while, and I'm confident that if it's too much that Dusty & Rolen will put him in his place. Of all things, that the one aspect of a team that I expect Dusty to manage well. What I didn't like was the move to try to take third that preceded the play at the plate. Even without the interference it was a total Willie Mays Hayes move, he just got bailed out.

On Leake: He exhibits poise and game management skills that belie his experience. I'm amazed at how he's able to consistently avoid blowing up the game when he doesn't have his best stuff or a few seeing-eye base hits find their way to the outfield grass. It seemed like the Nats had runners on base every inning tonight, yet Leake only gave up the one (unearned) run. He's also been great with the stick - to the point where I think Dusty should consider letting him hit for himself in situations where he's going to pull him from the mound anyway. It might offend some bench players since it would take a few ABs away from them, but I think you gotta let the kid keep swinging until he finally realizes that he's not supposed to be a good hitter.

On Rhodes: He's still great, and he's still being worked to death. He deserves to be an All-Star, but he also needs help. I know people are going to say Dusty's overworking him, but I think it's OK in this case. He's doing what he needs to do as a manager to try to win games, and it's not as if Rhodes is a spring chicken. He knows how to take care of himself, and even if he does get worn out, it's better a 40-year old reliever than a 23-year old starter. To me, if Rhodes has run out of gas by the beginning of August I'll blame Jocketty more than I'll blame Dusty. 7th & 8th inning relief pitchers should be about the easiest thing to trade for in the coming months.

On the experience: The Nats have a nice park. I sat in the 300-level behind home plate, just under the press box. Just like all the other new parks, I don't think there's really a bad seat in the house though. I like what they've done with how they offer different levels of pricing in the upper deck seats as you move out both directions from home plate. In Cincy, you get more people concentrated between 1st & 3rd base at the top level. To me it makes the ballpark look more empty when you do that, and as somebody who usually sits up there too, it's more crowded. If I'm not at a packed house, I prefer to have a little breathing room. For some reason, they seemed to make a big deal every time Cristian Guzman came to bat. I guess his name just lends itself to it - GUUUUUUZZMAAAAAANN. It's kinda weird to see such fanfare for a guy with a career OPS of .695, but whatever.

Finally... I went to Ray's Hell Burger in Rosslyn, VA before the game. It was by far the best burger I've ever had. I'd say it was equal to or better than about 70% of the steaks I've had in my lifetime.

i officially love scott rolen. who would have thought he would have 14 hrs on june 6th?

Should we be worried about a steroid investigation coming? :sneaky:

Seriously though, how he's not getting votes for the All-Star game amazes me. Bronson Arroyo has been special over the last month also. Loving how this team is coming together except for.......

Nick Masset, Mike "The stinkin" Lincoln, and Coco "For blown saves" Cordero!

I'd rather see some guys from AAA at this point in the bullpen. They've lost too many games already this season and we're not even half way done yet.

The minors are no different, they are blowing leads left and right as well...

The only guys that see able to help would be Burton and Bray who are both throwing in the minors now, and maybe Donnie Joseph late in the season. Maybe Jukich...

We have starters, Maloney, Wood, Chapman, and Volquez (when ready) that we will probably need in the pen at some point.

lecure was throwing in the pen in the 9th today, but i dont know if that was just to get some throwing in or to relieve cordero.

when chapman is called up, i really dont see why he wouldnt be working out of the pen at the start. especially if the starting rotation continues to pitch solid games each night. look for a trade or two by jockety to strengthen the back end of the pen because we seriously could use some help in the later innings. massett and cordero really have been disappointing, and ondrusek really just blows. if we are going to be serious contenders, rhodes cant be the only one pitching well consistently
