Reds tidbits (2010 season)

and it begins, the march to below .500. Pitching is just not good, and gave false hope against the Pirates and Astros. Against decent to good teams they get rocked.
4-5 vs the NL East (Mets, Braves, Marlins) and 3-3 vs the NL West (Padres and Dodgers). Every single one of those teams is .500 or significantly better. Of course, the Reds are 22-13 vs the NL Central, and sitting at 5-6 vs the Cardinals, who are now without Lohse and Penny for two weeks.

I'm not concerned yet. The middle relief needs to get better, but the farm is stocked with arms, trade fodder, and at least Volquez, Bray, Burton, and Chapman are close. The Reds schedule is heavily back-loaded, so as long as the offense doesn't go into the toilet and the pen can be patched together for the run in August, the Reds can stay in this thing.

They have given up an average of 6.3 runs per game to teams over .500. That is awful, and cannot continue. I doubt the bats will stay this hot all year.

Burton will be back in a week or so (he will take the spot Lincoln's worthless ass once occupied). Hopefully he will help. Bray and Volquez won't be back until after the All Star break. The big question there is how their arms respond to Tommy John surgery, and the next one is how their heads respond. Add in the fact Leake will either have to start spot starting the end of July or be shut down in September and the starting rotation does not get much better (I am not sold on Chapman being any kind of answer this year).

Anyway, if they are in it come the trade deadline they will need a right handed set up man (very doable) and I would like to see another starter (unlikely). We will see how it goes, but I believe from now until the All Star break the majority of the games are against teams over .500. Hence my thought it was the beginning of the road to below .500 (not that they will end there). Of course part of that was seeing them blow 3-0 and 7-3 leads.

Cincinnati Reds vs. St. Louis Cardinals - Recap - June 01, 2010 - ESPN

The Cardinals traded Rolen, who feuded with manager Tony La Russa, to the Blue Jays after the 2007 season.

"He's an outstanding player when he's healthy," La Russa said. "Probably their manager is getting more out of him than I did. I know people are going to speculate that and it's probably true. I'm sure it's true."

What. An. Ass.

"Their manager?" Really? He won't even use Dusty's name? Does anybody know what the feud between Dusty and La Russa is all about?

For the first time in 20 years, I actually have confidence in this team to win a big game. Maybe they wont beat Carpenter today but they'll have opportunities.

I'm feeling pretty good about the season so far.

I 100% guarantee they won't beat Carpenter today.

What a bunch of shit that game was. Ludwick breaks his bat and drops an RBI blooper 1 inch inside the right field line 100' away, while Bruce smokes a line drive and hits Rolen with it off first base. You just can't make this shit up. Somebody *up there* really hates the Reds, or Carpenter sold his soul.

In other news, since the Reds were running LeCure out there and Paul Konerko has been in a funk lately, I sat Konerko last night and played Rasmus.

I am a fucking genius!

I agree but with who?

Never seen so many pitches in the dirt.

Volquez once he gets back. LeCure in the mean time (Bailey is due back).

Yet I know it won't happen until after the All Star Break, so it doesn't really matter. In the mean time we get to watch 7 or more craptastic starts from Harang. Hey, at least he lowered his ERA with those strong 4 innings.
