Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

Bako goes yard off the RF foul pole. 9-5 now.

Corey Patterson is now up. That's the saddest thing about the Hairston injury. Patterson just got a promotion to 4th outfielder and 24th man.

Holy crap he got a hit. They should roll that ball into the dugout. Shit, they should sell it in eBay. There are 600 Griffey home run balls out there - not all that rare. How many Corey Patterson base hit balls can you say are out there? That's the real collector's item.

Why are you worried about 90 wins? Seriously? This team hasn't shown any type of consistency ESPECIALLY when it comes to road trips. Outside of Harang (who gets no run support) and Volquez, Arroyo and Cueto have been up and down (more up for Cueto, more down for the JTM spokesman) and there still isn't a solid choices as a 5th guy (although I think Bailey will either be the guy or he won't be a Red much longer).....

In short what I'm saying is worry about tomorrow, don't worry about the end of the season quite yet....

They just played an entire 30+ day stretch of .600 ball. They are just as good as any of the teams that will be in the hunt for the WC.

In short I what I'm saying is tommorow isn't a guarantee, see what you can do this year.

Schedule of the next 25 games(projected goal 15-10)
ATL x 1
W
@ PHI x 4 L L W L
@ FL x 4 W L L W
STL x 3
BOS x 3
LAD x 3
@ NYY x 3
@ TOR x 3
@ Clev x 1

The bad news- Jerry Hairstons out 2-4 weeks plus a rehab assignment. The guys been on a tear and the first legitimate leadoff guy the Reds have had in years.

The good news- Keppinger is starting his rehab assignment in A Sarasota this week. If he can make it back in a week or so that takes the sting of losing Hairston away.

The Ugly- Corey effin Patterson gets to play now. What have we done to deserve this?

I don't see where he gets CP in the lineup. If you play Patterson in CF to hit leadoff you sit either JR or Bruce. I'll probably regret saying this but even Dusty isn't that damn dumb*.

* A completely sane and rational human(or me) cannot account for what a panicked Dusty Baker might do when faced with a leadoff issue like he is right now. I can only use what passes for logic in my world and hope for the best. :paranoid:

His playing time will increase marginally because of Hairston's injury. He's now the 4th outfielder. When you want to make a defensive substitution you have to go with Patterson, instead of moving Hairston to the OF and putting Janish at SS. When you want to give somebody a day off, I guess A. Phillips is able to play the OF (although that seems dubious) but Patterson will likely get the call - and bat leadoff. :(

I actually have no problem with CP used as what he is, a true 4th OF. He is by far our best defensive OF. If he comes in late in a game his spot in the order is based on who he replaces, there is no more true leadoff man at that point. Using CP as a late inning defensive replacement is actually the only intelligent way to use him and I have zero problem with it.

As long as he isn't being trotted out there as our starting CF and leadoff hitter more than once every 10 days or so when someone needs a day off.

I guess I shouldn't be shocked, but I remembered reading your post last night and being impressed, only to check the standings this morning to find the Reds sitting in sixth place in the only six-team division in MLB. Furthermore, the Reds' record matches their Pythagorean record.

It's interesting to look at the Pythag. standings for the rest of the division. The Cubs have been the best team in baseball, and are actually playing 1 game BELOW their Pythag. record Apart from them and the Reds though, everyone else is getting results better than their Pythag. record.

Just looking at the history of this divsion and the teams on paper, it's easy for one to assume that the NL Central as a whole is playing over their heads so far and are due to regress to what everyone expected of them. However, I don't know that really means much for the Reds. The Pythag. standings would have them in fourth place instead of sixth, but only a half game ahead of Pythag. cellar-dwellers Houston & Pittsburgh.

Long story short - we've seen a few good things out of this Reds team lately, but it's going to take a significant win streak to turn this around and make the Reds into realistic pretenders, let alone contenders.

You can second-guess nearly everything over the course of an MLB season, but there were three games on the road trip that the Reds absolutlely gave away or fell on bad luck that have changed the complexion of this season at the moment (The two losses to the Fish, and the game in Philly vs. Kendrick). (Yes, I'm counting a blowout among games the Reds should have won. There were still plenty of missed opportunities on offense and Harang on the mound. That game was about mindset.) Win two of those three, and the Reds would be over .500, they'd have momentum, and would be in fourth place - 7.5 games back in the division and 5 games back in the wild card.
