Hopefully these are few and far between, but it sucks when they come on back to back nights...
I fully expect this bull pen to have its issues. The first one I put on Narron for not getting Coffey out of there against Berkman when he didn't have is A game and he had 3 lefties in the pen. As for last night, it was just a meltdown. I think it brings up the issue that we all knew was there when Hermanson didn't make the squad. They have no "proven" closer at the back end of this pen. That forces everybody one step up into a role that they shouldn't be in.
I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I think they need to evaluate Burton's closer potential over the next few weeks. He looks to be the only guy on the 40 man who has the "stuff" to be a closer. Well, I'd say Coffey also has the "stuff" but hasn't harnessed it yet. If some of the starters at the minor league level work out, Lohse could be a possiblity down the road. Bottom line, I think they need to get creative to fill that hole. What difference does it make who the closer is if you can't get out of the 7/8th with a lead? I also think they need to replace Hume. He hasn't been able to develop anyone since he has been here. Wagner, Coffey, Graves, etc. have all had the pitching ability and it has gone to waste under his watch. This bullpen resembles his pitching career way too much for my taste. We didn't use to call him "Boom Boom" Hume for nothing.
