Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

Ross is so fucking lost at the plate I'm not exaggerating when I say a lot of us could do better. He had a hanging breaking ball to mash tonight and completely fanned on it. That's a sign of a deeeeep funk.

Enjoy the feelings of last night because Uncle Milty's on tonight.:sick1:

Damn You Jaxbuck!......Killjoy, lol.

From "Ryan Freel Dirty Shirt Night" to "Eric Milton Free Baseball Night". :(

Also, I've finally figured out why Narron has been so obsessive over the R-L-R-L thing. It's because he knew that one day, he'd face Charlie Manuel in the sixth inning of a one-run game.

Even worse for us is the fact that Cole Hammels is on the mound for the Phillies...:(

Can't get much worse for us on paper. Excellent lefty for them vs Milton for us...we're bringing a knife to a gun fight.

I'm not the overly optimistic type but when a game is so lopsided going in, it usually doesn't play out that way. Lets pray that holds true.

I swear, everytime I go to a game it is either Lohse or Milton. And facing a lefty too... :yow1:

Well, hopefully the bats show up.

Can't ask much more from Uncle Milty. 6 IP 2ER 3Runs overall should have just been 1.

Ross hits into a triple play the likes of which you may never see again in your lifetime. 1st and 2nd no one out, he hits a grounder to to 3rd base and runs so fucking slow they get all 3.

Oh yeah, Alex Gonzalez in the 5 hole? First 2 AB's K's on 6 pitches, never even fouls one off iirc.

Hamels Fans 15 As Phillies Top Reds 4-1

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Everything was lined up for Cole Hamels to turn in the best performance of his brief career - an air-clearing team meeting, great weather, and Philadelphia's first triple play in almost eight years.
Hamels had a career-high 15 strikeouts in his first complete game and the Phillies turned the first triple play in the major leagues this season in a 4-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds before a sellout crowd Saturday night.
"I was able to get the count in my favor, and even when the count wasn't in my favor, I was able to execute," said Hamels, who went five innings and earned a no-decision in his major league debut in Cincinnati last May 12.

Sometimes you just tip your cap to the other guy. Hamels destroyed us last night.

The only tim he got into trouble Ryan Freel did his mad hacker routine and bailed him out.

You know, last night I was on the verge of praising the other MLB teams for getting all of the good lefties while we are stuck with Milton. Then I realized something. If the tides were turned and Hamels were pitching for us, leaving Milton pitching for Philly- such as about 3/4 years ago, Milton would have decimated us and Hamels would have pitched well in the loss.

The common denominator: Our hitting sucks!

To further clarify, against any left handed pitcher our guys suck! What gives? Its not that much different facing a righty vs. lefty. It should be about the type stuff the pitcher brings to the table. Not all lefties are Randy Johnson in his prime but we make them look that way. Why is it that our guys are so inept that they cannot make the adjustments the way major leaguers are supposed to adjust? Yes, I know theres release point, spin, direction, angle and so on so forth when finding the ball coming out of the pitchers hand which makes a difference. Split second differences. Our guys aren't fouling balls off or "just missing" homeruns. They are whiffing wildly on a consistent basis. I'm mystified by this. Maybe we need a left handed batting practice coach. Hey I'm all for Milton pitching BP. He basically pitches BP to other teams every 5th day so why not boost our guys confidence!? :(

Anyone else out there have any answers?

No insight on why lefties are that much harder to hit other than you just don't see them as much. Its been that way for eons though, so there is obviously something to it.

Sunday morning stat check(all team numbers are NL only-16 teams):

The only thing that really matters:
Runs Scored 71
Runs Allowed 76

Pitching
OBP against us: 2nd
SLG against: 7th
BB allowed: 16th (best)
K's:T2nd
Team ERA: 6th
Pitches per IP: 8th
Hits per 9: 7th

What else can you say? The pitching has been superb and these numbers include the bullpens horrid week. We are not allowing walks and getting K's, that helps minimize the damage. They are not overly hittable and aren't setting themselves up for collapse by throwing too many pitches so far.

Defense
Eaned runs allowed: 64-T8th (16 is best)
Total Runs allowed: 76-7th (16 s best)
Unearned Runs allowed: 12-1st (worst)

Here is the issue and one I don't think gets enough attention. I consider Runs against a function of overall defense, much like football, and pitching is only one component. Its about overall run prevention. Bottom line is our defense is picking some pretty god-awful times to be bad and its costing us big time.

Offense
Runs: 10th
OBP: 13th
SLG: 13th
OPS: 13th
BB: 5th
HR: 4th

Not exactly news that the offense has sucked balls so far. If our pitching numbers didn't illustrate the importance of BB's, our offensive numbers surely do. Its the only thing we are doing well so far and is helping us score more runs than we should be. Still having the ability to play longball isn't hurting us but we have played a lot at GAB so far, we'll see how our power show does on the road.

Summary:

When you score less runs than you allow, you are lucky to be .500. So if you are like me, use this reminder to keep your expectations in line and the frustration gets a lot easier to deal with.

I came into this season saying we were a legit .500 team if we got big offensive years from EE and Dunn. Well EE's sucked eggs so far and I'm not convinced Dunn is 100% healthy after that back spasm thing. If you would have told me we'd be at .500 with those two situations I'd have taken it.

All that said its early and if the RH hitters continue in this funk and Dunn misses any significant time or has a long period of innefectivness due to a nagging injury there is no way we'll finish at .500.

The starting pitching just can't keep this up, the pen is mediocre, the defense is better but still inconsistent. Again, all WK has done is get us to flirt with .500 in a more traditional manner than before.
