Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

The latest per Trent:

Official roster for OD is at 24 men.

Milton to DL

Santos not one of the 24 but is still obviously in play. Could be a trade for the 25th guy or they are using someone on a minor league contract they can send back down if/when Milty comes off the DL.

I was thinking that or bringing up/trading for another OF as they don't need a 5th starter right away.

Leadoff/OF is a big need with Deno hurt and Freel as fragile as he is. I also never want to see Conine in the OF.

As the season grinds on that 5th spot(hell the 3rd and 4th for that matter) is going to be a festering sore.

I can really see the arguement for either one and would lean ever so slightly toward another leadoff man. We don't have ANY in the system. We have some options as the year wears on for the 5th spot.

If they could move Frenchie for an OF, then Santos could stick around for the moment. That would be the best move.

Also, Jerry on the closer situation: "Between Weathers, Stanton, Coffey and Saarloos, we feel pretty good"
Committee it is. Which isn't all bad, as Jaxbuck has pointed out, you should use your best reliever as the situation dictates, not just for the 9th. Notice Burton wasn't in that quote. Doesn't look like they are going to pull the "Moneyball" move of sticking him in there. Glad to see he made the team. They stuck him in a couple of pressure situations this spring and he stood up. Herm was a good gamble, but glad they cut him when it became clear he wasn't up to the task.

If I'm a small market GM and have "closer by committee" talent I would take the least talented of the 3 or 4 options and make sure he got every statistical save opportunity. I would make the organizations mantra "this guy is a stud, he's our closer, stopper" etc. The propoganda would be steady.

Then as soon as he had a good numebr of saves I would shop him to the GM that is most willing to overpay for that stat. Do that every couple of years and you can restock your ML system without actually giving much up.

Saves are like Batting Average, very deceiving stats that people take at face value and overestimate the importance of.

I would love to be able to make a move for a #1/2 hitter with good bad control and some speed...That could man an outfield spot...

We have 3 guys with Livingston, The Lizard and Bailey later in the season that give us hope at the 5 spot later in the season...Also Sarloos can man that spot if need be and be the long reliever out of the pen...

Did we send Countaglus to AAA?

You need a guy adept at making contact, taking pitches, bunting, hit and run etc.. so your leadoff man is now a RISP for #3 and #4 to clean up. Negate Hatte's lack of power and speed and get a lot of "productive outs" from him. Side benefit is Dunn getting to see a lot of pitches before he steps in.

How about this one?

Freel
Hatt
EE
Dunn
Griff
Philips
Ross/Gonzales
Gonzales/Ross

I know, I know, it isn't RLRL, but it just may be crazy enough to work?!?!

Obviously wouldn't work with a LH on the mound, can't see Conine in the 2 hole, but Hatte seems like the ideal fit in the 2. Doesn't strike out, moves runners, can allow Freel to move first to third with the hit-n-run. And EE would be getting good pitches with runners in scoring position and Dunn behind him.

All looks kind of familiar :) You just like EE in the 4 where I like him in the 3.

I was a little shocked when I saw Herm was cut, then I thought about the smile Jax must have today.

All-in-all, I am very glad they kept Burton, very glad they have Milton as a 5th when he returns or possibly even gone and am very content to look for a closer outside via trade (heard a fantasy related rumor of Pinero (sp?) from the Sox, not sure it holds any weight) or just run them out in situations.

I think the club looks a lot better with Santos, Sarloos, Burton etc than it does without. I had forgot what a solid, underrated pitcher Santos was with Mil a few years back. I hope we can find a way to keep him but that may be hard once Bray and Da Jew come off the DL.

How can you have good and bad control? :)

Just floating one out there, how about we trade Cormier back to Phil for Aaron Rowand? Not sure what kind of cash he is making, but I know Philly wants to move him in the worst way and he could fit our need for a speedy, defensive, reserve OF who could hit leadoff on Freel's days off(although I have heard his bat is real slow this spring). Taking on Cormier's 2.25 and giving some cash could make it work. Then we put Santos back on the roster and all is happy in Reds Blogger land!

So Essentially we are now looking at

starting 5
Harang
Arroyo
Belisle
Lohse
Sarloos(swing man)

HB, EZ(dep on injury) and Livingston in the wings.

Thats as young/reasonably talented an organizational SP depth chart as has been seen in Redsland in many a year. I'll take it.

Pen is
Coffee
Burton
Coutlangus
Stormy
Stanton
Cormier

Bray. EG await and Santos maybe the 25th man.

Lets stay at 11 pitchers and go get some offensive help in return for Frenchie. Replace him with Santos untill Bray is ready then either go to 12 pitchers and cut Moeller.

Starting 8
C Ross
1B Hatte
2B Phillips
3b EE
SS Gonzales
LF Dunn
CF Freel
RF JR

Bench
C Moeller -fucking waste but I expected it
C/1B Valentin
1B/OF Conine-We will see a Dunn, JR, Conine OF at some point bank on it
INF Castro-can pick it if its hit right at him
OF Hamilton-THE wildcard to this season

Pitching looks better on paper
Defense is better
Offense is a concern on paper
Manager is an imbecile and probably can't spell paper

EE, Dunn and Hamilton have big years we are in good shape.

EE, Dunn, Arroyo and/or Harang have injuries or bad years we are in the hurt locker.

I'm going to go all CB40, shoot for the moon and say we actually break .500 this year. :wink2:

I guess I am wearing off on you...

Within 24 hrs. of the 1st pitch of the season...

I have a feeling that Harang is going to have to throw very good since we are facing a pretty good offensive team and Zambrano is on the mound for the Cubbies...

We usually have pretty good success vs Zambrano. He's such a head case, if you can touch him up a little he'll implode late. Too bad Dusty isn't still there to leave him in past 120 pitches so we could really tee off on his ass.

It was breifly mentioned in a previous post, but the reason we have to keep Moeler is because Valentin is our best PH (I think I heard somewhere he was the best PH in all baseball or all of the NL, but can't attribute the quote).

This is where Hamilton really could help us. If he can become our top PH, that would allow Valentin to be our primary backup and we could kill this 3 Catcher BS. I know Valentine is nice since he is a switch hitter, but it is a roster killer having to carry 3 C.

This is very funny. It is from Hal McCoy, an interview with Narron. It is posted for Sunday, so I'd imagine the interview was completed Saturday.

Twice in it, Narron mentions Herm as a big key to the club. Then, maybe 24 hours later, he takes the company stance on letting Herm go and has all the confidence in the world in BP by committee.

Stand up and be a man. Either you wanted him or you didn't.
