RB/WR Curtis Samuel (Buffalo Bills)

Poor ball security, weak receiver and qb protector..I don't see much time for Rod.

I didn't see him fumble last year when given PT, and he's actually one of our better receivers at RB. I think we'll have a committee of a pair and a spare next year. If you've seen some of the practice video, Rod is tearing it up. Curtis will get his touches, but not always in the run game. Split out, as well as in the return game. I don't think Curtis is the primary RB backup

This is part of what confuses me at this point with the offense. It sounds like you're describing the much vaunted "Harvin position", and there are several players that could project there (Samuel included), but doesn't Wilson kind have a lead there? Or was Wilson's move to the WR group supposed to transform him into a pure receiver (my impression is that it was to work on his receiver skills for a hybrid role).

I think Eze is in the driver's seat to be the feature back, with 1-2 more filling out the stable from Smith, Dunn, Ball. Then there's Samuel and Wilson who could get carries from outside that convention. There's so many young weapons on this offense that I have a hard time picturing how it'll look and either some kids are going to get left behind or every position is going to be switched out a lot more than I'm used to. But I remember last year when they were saying almost every game that they wanted to get more plays for Wilson... but they just didn't materialize.
It's a good problem to have... I just have a hard time figuring out where this is all going until I see it in action.

I see it this way, and the mods will hopefully correct me if they see fit.

Curtis is being brought in for to possibly play the Harvin/hybrid/pivot position, but first he needs to learn a position at the college level first. RB is easier to get down than WR, and he isn't being tasked with being either, but a hybrid of both. Able to line up wide, in the slot and in the backfield as well as returning kicks and punts. Dontre was brought in last year and was brought along in the same way, since there isn't a pure "hybrid" position and no position coach for that position, both guys were RBs in HS so it's easier to start them at RB and then translate their talents into the passing game(so yes, like you stated, to work on his receiving skills). On the flip side, Jalin Marshall is more skilled at the WR position, so he sits in on WRs, but he's also a hybrid. At UF Percy Harvin was a WR mostly in HS, so that was the position he worked with, but was able to line up in various locations, but Brandon James did the same, but was a RB in HS and sat in with them. But both were hybrids.
Samuel, Wilson nor Marshall will be tasked with carrying the ball out of the backfield primarily, they'll get the ball more in a "touches" capacity, through receiving and running and return game. EzE, Smith, Dunn and Ball will still be primarily RBs, but the 3 hybrids are just more bullets in the chamber for Herman and Meyer to fire, by attacking the perimeter or catching the ball in mismatches. Herman has stated from his hire, that he literally wants to use the entire field on offense, and these 3, in addition to the true RBs and true WRs and our dual threat QB do that.

I hope that makes sense, and that I explained it correctly

I've learned my lesson after last year with Wilson. I'm not going to expect too much from Samuel this year, and rather defer the lofty expectations to next year. If he is a stud his first year, bonus.

Agreed. Fans get into trouble trying to look for frosh to be their game changers. We have plenty of talent,Samuel is just an added bonus this year. More realistic expectations will be for year 2. All of the camp talk and watching drills is fun, but playing on Saturdays is a whole lot different.
And tbh it doesn't even matter who's faster between Dontre and Curtis. You have to be more than fast to play. I think both could be dangerous eventually. Once they have a true position to call their own.

Just saw the play at the 0:57 mark in the new practice video. I'm back on board. He'll be the second best player on the team behind Braxton:

Samuel will definitely get some action but they'll keep it simple for him...no need to get cute when already have so much talent at the skilled positions. The designation of a position does not mean much imo with guys like Dontre, Jalin, and Samuel. They may have a primary position but they're going to get the ball in a variety of ways. As for Dontre, I thought he had a great season fit a freshman at his size. Simply put, we could ride out Hyde and that's basically what we did. As for how Samuel could compare, I think his size (as mentioned, he's about 20 pounds of muscle bigger than Dontre) and experience in coming in early this spring could give him a bigger role. The only mitigating factor is how many other talented guys we have get the ball to...if gets the ball a lot, it means he is an absolute stud.
