I like the idea of limiting Brax's carries.....here comes the but.


but the reason our offense is so dynamic is because of his running ability. The design QB runs keep the defense honest. Braxton needs to do a better job of picking up what is there then getting down. The next timehe slides will be the first.

I am excited to see what Curtis can do tho. If the line can gel, this offense could be through the roof good.

I'm saying that I'm hoping we pick our spots with him a little better. For example, I don't want to see him laying out against Indiana like his did last year. I enjoy watching those plays and I would show you the dozens where he ran for less than 2 yards but those aren't on YouTube. To me it was that I see his designed runs as a TD 5% of the time a big pickup 10% of the time and little to no gain the other 85, particularly on 3rd down. The TDs you showed were all read option where he read the defense great. Those have decent success rates. The ones that seem to almost always fail are the qb draw plays.

More Praise For Samuel

We asked Herman about true freshman running back Curtis Samuel and the coach’s eyes lit up.

“Well, the first thing is he’s a great kid,” Herman said. “He’d run through that brick wall right now as a coach if you told him to. He’s got no issues off the field. He’s respectful and he’s a great worker.

“And he has a really rare combination of explosiveness, quickness, true long-range speed and toughness. A lot of people don’t realize that he’s a tough, rugged dude that’s not going to shy away from contact. And he has a decent frame at 5-foot-11, 195 pounds. It’s been fun to watch him, man.”

It’s safe to say that Samuel will not only play this season, but will be on the field quite a bit.

Last year Dontre was primarily a decoy...if you have 2-3 of those guys on the field at the same time (also see Jalin Marshall), no way you can just focus on any one guy. We always get these wild-eyed scenarios of putting certain skill guys on the field at the same time but I think it is very feasible to have 2-3 of those guys on the field often. Jalin will likely be in the slot alot but if you recall, we often had Dontre and Hyde in a two back set with Braxton. Very possible to have any combination of Samuel/Dontre/Eze in a two back set with Braxton, with either Jalin/Dontre in the slot. For this reason (and the fact that he is much larger than Dontre was as a frosh), I think Samuel can have a bigger and more consistent impact his freshman year than Dontre did. He just needs to stay healthy and hang on to the ball...if he does, he could have an impact for us this year.

There are a few factors that lead to Curtis making a huge impact his freshman year. He's much bigger than Dontre when he came in and it's documented that he can run between the tackles. He has the best open field speed/ home run ability where as Dontre is better in space. Maybe the most important factor is that he enrolled early to learn the playbook and allow his body more development under marriotti. Although the Elliot is an elite back, the allocation of carries is far less certain than it was a year ago with a veteran OL and RB. Elliot will receive the bulk of the carries but the 2nd string and h-back carries will be the most interesting to chart.

Yep. When Samuel comes in to spell Eze, the speed on the field will be stupid. Not that EE is slow by any means but the quickness of Samuel is already alarming and him Dontre and Devin on the field at once is almost wrong. Then Dixon on the other side might just make us all lose our minds. Can't wait for football Saturdays!!
