RB/WR Curtis Samuel (Buffalo Bills)

I thought it was noteworthy when he (Curtis Samuel) got stuffed on the goal line on three (four?) straight carries during the spring game.

Noteworthy because they put Samuel in that position and because it is certainly an area where Dunn, Ball and Smith can get some carries at the very least.

Very true, I noticed that too. He will have a role in the offense this year as a play maker but around the goal line, I would be shocked if Dunn or Smith are not getting the carries.

I would have no problem with Samuel getting the ball at a goal line situation. I just don't want to see him try to run it between the tackles. Get Wilson, Samuel and Eze on on a goal line play all lining up between the slot positions, and have one of them motioning. Very hard to account for all 3.

Just sayin': Inside the 5 yard line is a situation where "size matters" for a running back. We will definitely miss Carlos Hyde's combination of size and speed in 2014.

Second on the depth chart? Are you kidding me? I think they are just trying to motivate the other backs.
Are you kidding me with that comment? Meyer has raved about his home run ability and ability to run between the tackles at his size. During spring practices his name was brought up by Meyer after nearly every practice and that's with being injured for like a third of the practices. The running backs race seems like a 3 horse race anyway with Elliot ahead and Samuel and Dunn chasing for carries. All 3 bring different talents to the RB position. Rod Smith seems to always find a way to fall back in the pack.

I think that's a valid response from Taos, it's still surprising to see a true frosh 2nd on the depth chart. The play has not been a question, but it's surprising also because we don't know how well he can block or if he's grasped the play look, both are very important. Dontre could do neither well as a true frosh, and had just as much explosion and home run ability, but you must be able to do more than that. I also think this is a motivation tool, and Curtis has some ground to make up to be on the field consistently like EzE, Dunn, Smith, or Ball. All of those 4 have shown abilities to be complete RBs. Besides, our offense isn't going to use RBs solely as ball carriers anymore, with the talent that Urban is stockpiling.

FWIW, I think it's both a motivational tool for the firm of Smith, Dunn & Ball as well as a legitimate reflection of his sense of Samuel's value in the system. Urban may try to use things to motivate players but he doesn't seem to bullshyte them. It's definitely a scenario of raise your game or get left behind. I can't claim to be able to tell anything other than superficial differences between the horses in the stable and may not be able to identify what's special about Samuel but there's obviously something there that the older players (other than EE) don't have or none of this would come up. You don't have to motivate/manipulate your older players if they're already where you want them and this could be a situation where motivation doesn't matter; they may not be physically able to make up whatever the difference is.

I always kind of forget about Samuel. He has to be pretty incredible to be looking at serious PT early with guys like Dontre, Eze, Jalin, etc. all vying for touches this next season. I am so excited to see all these weapons, I think UFM finally has the weapons and speed he wants in his offense and Samuel embodies that.
