RB Roderick Smith (Official Thread)

I think Smith might have the most upside of all the backs on the roster. You don't move a guy like that.

I think he definetly has the most potential of any of the RBs we currently have before the froshes hit the field. If he can stop fumbling the ball...

Smith seeks bigger role with focused Buckeyes
By Pete DiPrimio of The News-Sentinel
Wednesday, May 2, 2012

Rod Smith got the message. You do not relax around new coach Urban Meyer. You do not play at half speed, do not give 80 percent effort, do not let your concentration wander.

Meyer came to Ohio State to win. Smith, a former Harding standout, came to play. And if they combine to get what they both want, all the better.

?Coach Meyer is real intense,? Smith says. ?He's real in tune to every little detail. He's something different that we haven't had since I've been here.?

Last year's 6-7 record, the consequence of the tattoos-for-memorabilia scandal that cost former coach Jim Tressel his job and the Buckeyes their Big Ten title-winning mojo, is fuel to a renewed fire.

?We want to get Ohio State football to where it should be, where it's been in the past,? Smith says. ?Where we have a dominant offense, a dominant defense. Being an elite team in the nation.?

As a result, a sense of urgency was everywhere in Meyer's first Ohio State spring practice. He returned to coaching after a year break as a TV analyst following successful runs at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida.

?Last year was a down year,' Smith says. ?We're trying to make a statement. We have a clean slate. Get back strong and get back to being Ohio State Buckeyes.?

Ahhh, the forgotten man. With all the talk of Hyde and Jordan, as well as Dunn, Smith (I hope) has quietly and resolutely been making his plans to excell. He has a ton of talent, and yes he has that Eddie George thing (fumbling) going, but as Eddie fixed it, so too do I hope for Rod. For the good of Buckeye Nation, I believe that we'll need him in the backfield, and hope that we see him sooner than later.

Urban said Rod Smith is joining the punt block team and it sounded like that was a huge step towards earning Meyer's respect. Up until now has Rod Smith lingered around Urban's dog house, and will a commitment to Urban's special teams squad be the proof Meyer needs to see in order to get Rod on the field as a RB more?

Absolutely, he's stressed that repeatedly throughout the week about Smith. That fumble late in the game didn't help him much in terms of helping Smith pull ahead or even with Bri'onte Dunn at running back, but he's shown a willingness to get in there and work hard on special teams that might not have always been there in the past. Meyer has really raved about that this week, and I'll be watching what he does there since that unit is so important to this coaching staff. That's definitely a starting point to getting more work in the backfield, no question.

I would love a major RB battle right now. Perfect scenario for me would be for Dunn and Smith to each have good games with similar amount of touches and similarly effective results. Urban from day one has instilled a competitive nature on this team. Wouldn't a battle among the RB unit be perfect right about now, spurring each one to push beyond their current levels? I for one would love that.

I, too, ShowMe, hope that the competition pushes them both onward. I'd hate to take the 'shirt off the other freshman. Post #610 was written by a wise man (a**?) who foretold the same thing. This is Smith's opportunity, I hope he makes the most of it. Both of those young men will be straining at the bit to squeeze out the last inches of each run.

All to the benefit of the Buckeyes, of course, and as it should be.

:gobucks3::gobucks4::banger: PS, I don't take myself seriously, just my Buckeyes
