RB Roderick Smith (Official Thread)

Ready for this one?

292 yards, 4 touchdowns.

Against a defense that was allowing 138.7 ypg.

Harding ran their version of the wildcat with Smith at the helm. He didn't attempt any passes, handed the ball off a couple of times.

Had a couple of big hits while playing defense, too.

Can't wait to see him in scarlet and gray!

Hawks unleash new trick to take down Knights

Greg JonesHigh school sports editor

The game billed as the battle of the backs lived up to the hype.

Running backs Rod Smith of Harding and Klay Fiechter of Norwell put on a show with the Hawks slipping by with a better second half, 28-21, in a Class 3A sectional football opener Friday.

. . .

Running out of the wildcat formation for much of the night, Smith ran for 274 yards and four touchdowns.

. . .

Smith, an Ohio State recruit, had touchdown runs of 54, 2, 51 and 37 yards.

?We did it last year, but it didn?t work real good,? Smith said of the Gator formation. ?We have been saving it for the playoffs, and I couldn?t wait to get out here and do it. It could have been my last game. I just wanted to come out here and give my team all I got.?

With the yards, Smith climbed into the top 10 on the state?s all-time rushing list with 6,542 yards to rank ninth.

?In this weather, it is all about chopping your feet and not trying to make too many cuts,? Smith said.

Norwell led 13-12 at the half before Smith put the Hawks ahead 28-13 with two second-half scores. Fiechter pulled Norwell within a score, at 28-21, with 2:29 remaining on a touchdown and two-point conversion run.

?We did the best we could,? Smith said. ?The coaches told us (Fiechter) was going to get his yards, and we just had to play Harding ?D.? I don?t think they played a whole game, and we came out in the second half and wore them out.

No Herschel Walkers on the horizon in recruiting
1:22 am October 28, 2009, by Chip Towers

...
Ohio State?s Eddie George was even bigger (6-3, 235) but not as fast and he didn?t lift his team to such heights.
...
There are two big backs in the respective top 10s. Ohio State commitment Roderick Smith of Fort Wayne, Ind., is a 6-3, 220-pound running back. But his 40-yard time is listed as 4.80, hardly Herschel-esque.

That article was pretty weak, uh Adrian Peterson or Chris Wells ring a bell?

Neither of those guys was Walker (speaking strictly based upon a college HB). Having said that, it's a bit like someone saying there's no Jordan playing HS bball. Meanwhile, I love Smith's running style and I too doubt his football spead is 4.8. Perhaps Smith can one day become a "mere" Eddie George for tOSU

Too much is sometimes made of 40 times, but still I don't see this kid running a 4.8! All the rest of the sites have him listed as running a 4.5, which is a lot more realistic. He's put up some amazing stats this year, does anyone know where he stands as far as yardage and TDs so far?

It's funny how the media makes a big issue if your 40 time seems too low (Pryor's 4.3) or if your 40 time is too High (4.8). They seem to accept in the 4.5 range though so no wonder most kids list that as their time.

I had no idea he's as big as he is... geez can't wait to get him on campus thats for sure.

Hate to get too far off topic, but I saw a quote from Trindon Holiday's coach in high school where he said he would list Holiday's 40 time as 4.38 for coaches even though he actually timed it as 4.23 because he wanted it to sound more believable.

Rod's Harding team was ousted from the IHSAA playoffs earlier this evening 21-14. Rod was held to 71 yards rushing. The Eastbrook team that defeated them was undefeated and had a very good defense. Weather was sloppy but they seemed to key on Smith all night. Rod was interviewed on the news and seemed very sad and mad about the loss and said something to the effect of "you can blame me for this loss, I didn't do as well as I needed to". Classy statement by the kid, but as we all know football is a team game and his team did not get the job done. No way he should be blamed for the loss. He can now turn his focus to getting better and stronger to join the Buckeyes.
