Rod's Harding team was ousted from the IHSAA playoffs earlier this evening 21-14. Rod was held to 71 yards rushing. The Eastbrook team that defeated them was undefeated and had a very good defense. Weather was sloppy but they seemed to key on Smith all night. Rod was interviewed on the news and seemed very sad and mad about the loss and said something to the effect of "you can blame me for this loss, I didn't do as well as I needed to". Classy statement by the kid, but as we all know football is a team game and his team did not get the job done. No way he should be blamed for the loss. He can now turn his focus to getting better and stronger to join the Buckeyes.
Thanks for sharing, Boiler.

In the second half, Harding never crossed midfield. And in the fourth quarter, they scratched out just 5 yards and never advanced the ball past their own 20.

Eastbrook, on the other hand, bottled up Harding star Rod Smith, limiting him to 78 yards on 25 carries and no run longer than 11 yards. Conversely, its own workhorse, fullback Jeremy Porter-Jones, slogged north-and-south through the muck for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

“They had everybody in the box,” Smith said. “Field was messed up, so we really couldn’t use our speed. Basically all they did was play good on this type of field.”

And Harding did not.

“Really, they lined up exactly how we wanted them to line up,” Haydock said. “But we couldn’t use our speed. You know, you can load up to stop Rod, and we’ve got that speed in the slot. But they couldn’t use it because they couldn’t get their footing to get outside.”

Tough break for Roderick.

Rod Smith: 1,000 Carries And Runnin'
Posted by Dave Biddle on Nov 09, 2009 at 04:40 pm

Future Ohio State running back Roderick Smith recently wrapped up his illustrious high school career at Fort Wayne (Ind.) Harding and we have his final statistics to pass on to you.

As a senior this season, Smith (6-3, 220, 4.5) rushed for 1,855 yards (6.5 yards per carry) and 19 touchdowns in 11 games. For his career, he piled up 6,655 rushing yards, which is the eighth-most in Indiana history.

Rod Smith missing from All-State team
By Greg JonesHigh school sports editor

It caught me as strange to see Rod Smith's name missing from the Associated Press All-State team, announced Wednesday.

The Harding senior running back was on the honorable mention list for 3A, but was not among the top two running backs named.

Now I know how tough it is to name these All-State teams, with my involvement with the 4A team.

But leaving Smith off the list is a tough one to take. The Ohio State recruit is the state's No. 8 all-time leading rusher with over 6,620 career yards, including 1,855 this year.

Smith didn't have a great year in some regards, but he bettered his effort as a freshman, 1,800, to get a single-season career high, and he played outstanding defense at safety.

This kid could be playing in the Big Ten next year at the premier football program in that league.

I will continue to scratch my head over that one.

That's okay, he has more than All-State to worry about where he's going next.

Agreed. Sounds like sour grapes over there. BTW how are you enjoying Wichita? First and foremost thank you for your service, but you must have made someone mad to end up down here. Take it from another Buckeye in exile here in KS. This place can be brutal, but in your case you've already noticed the best view of this state is while flying over/away from it!:)

#8 running back(Scout) in the entire country.
#57 rated player in the entire country(ESPN150)

But only the third best RB in 3A ball in the state of Indiana. Keep an eye on the Hoosiers and the Boilers...that state is LOADED with talent.
