On film I would rate RS as having much better vision and footwork. Beanie a is bigger between the tackles power runner with a lethal stiff arm. I have a friend who is a Penn State fan who thinks RS is one of the 3 best backs in the country this year. He is not looking forward to playing us the next 4 years.

I don't think you give Beanie anywhere near the credit he deserved and deserves for his vision. Smith has all the tools to be a great one, but there was a reason Beanie was the #1 player in the country. I don't think it's fair to either Beanie OR Roderick to compare the two at this point.

Although Beanie wasn't quite a burner with break away speed he had an explosive burst that allowed him to run by defenders who couldn't change gears as quickly. That also was shown when he would cut back against the grain and blow by the back seven when he found a running lane.

I think Roderick is more fluid, agile and might be slightly faster than Wells, but I also don't think he has that kind of explosive burst that was responsible for so many of Wells long runs. This of course is just my opinion going off a couple of mins of film on Roderick Smith and seeing nearly ever run Beanie has had the past 4 of years multiple times. I'd say his running style was a little more like George than Wells but either way the comparisons are both hyperbolizes at this point.

Good friends set to take show to Ohio

Rod Smith
Position: Football running back
Height/weight: 6-4, 220
Senior: 291 carries, 1,855 yards, 19 touchdowns
Career: 6,625 rushing yards (No. 8 in state history)

Deshaun Thomas
Position: Basketball forward
Height/weight: 6-7, 210
Senior: 542 points, 33.8 points per game*
Career: 2,796 points (No. 5 in state history)*

The argument can be made that seniors Rod Smith, a running back from Harding, and Deshaun Thomas, a basketball forward from Bishop Luers, are Fort Wayne?s finest in their respective sports in the city?s high school athletic history.

And the two good friends are both going across the state line to Ohio State. Thomas signed his letter of intent to the Buckeyes, while Smith will make it official today.

"Even though we are not one of the big states like Texas, Ohio and Florida, we have talent that can equal everybody in any sport," Smith said. "Knowing we are two of the elite athletes and going to the same school, we are going to put Fort Wayne on the map."

Ohio State has been on the top of both players? list almost from their freshman seasons four years ago. Thomas committed to the Buckeyes after his first high school season, while Smith waited until he was a senior but was targeted by the Buckeyes since a 7-on-7 camp at Ohio State as a freshman.

"I am just ready to sign and make it official," Smith said. "I have been down there plenty of times, and I know a lot of the guys on the team. It is just icing on the cake. Four years went so fast. Just 14 years old when I came in, and now I am 18 and ready to go into college life and become an adult." The two have even talked about being roommates, but that most likely won?t happen in Year 1.

"Hopefully in the long run we end up rooming together, but I think I have to room with a football player my the first year, but if (Thomas) stays long enough (and not go to the NBA) we will end up as roommates, I am sure," Smith said. "We stay in touch, and we have each other?s back through whatever. He is a real close friend. It is good to know we are going to the same school, and we are no strangers to each other."

Smith set to sign with Buckeyes
Top running back is expected to make big contribution early.

...
?I?m just glad that it is finally here,? Smith said of the opportunity to sign his National Letter of Intent today. ?I?m officially going to be a part of Ohio State University.?
...
?He?s going to one of the top five programs in the country,? Harding coach Sherwood Haydock said. ?Running backs are a big deal there. We feel he?s made a wise choice and Ohio State has made a wise choice.?
...
?He doesn?t run like he?s 6-3,? Haydock said. ?He has the spin moves and acceleration. He doesn?t take long strides unless he needs to. He keeps his feet close to ground where he can cut. His vision is really great. He has great balance.?
...
?He has the power when he needs it,? Haydock said. ?He can be athletic when he needs to be. He has track speed. He was the leadoff man in the (400 meter relay team) that was state runner-up last year. You put that all together and it makes for a heck of a running back combination.?
...
?He has to grow a lot as a weightlifter,? Haydock said. ?He?s been a three-sport athlete his whole life and he hasn?t had the time others have had in the weight room.
?One of the things Ohio State coaches are excited about is once Rod gets on campus and eats three great meals a day and trains for football 12 months a year, he?ll be a really big running back. He could end up 230 to 240.?
...
?We limited the recruiting early on because he always wanted Ohio State,? Haydock said. ?Michigan State gave a good spiel. He thought hard about them.?
...
?The whole coaching staff and (those) on the academic side seemed like they really cared about me,? Smith said.
...
?He?s different from their other running backs,? Haydock said. ?Those guys are under 6-foot and under 210 or 200 pounds and have great speed. He has the great speed along with that size. He has tremendous athletic ability. I can see him and Pryor in the backfield. That would be deadly.?
...
?One of things Ohio State coaches said was he?ll get on field early, if not as a running back then on special teams,? Haydock said. ?We joked around and told (running backs coach) Dick Tressel that he?d better sit on Rod or the safety coach or the outside linebacker coach might take him.?
...
?His best position is as a running back,? Haydock said. ?He runs as well as anybody as I?ve seen, and he?s big and fast. There aren?t many backs like that.?
...
?I?ve been recruited as a running back and I want to play running back,? Smith said. ?If other spots like safety open up, I?d be more than happy to do that. But I?d really like to be a running back.?

"if their was a situation where there was depth questions and it could get him on the field faster I still think he could proform at a high level at LB or S in college, just probably not as well as he would at RB.

Bucknuts $ - Smith: The Next Beanie?
By Dave Biddle
Posted Feb 03, 2010

He really enjoyed serving as a team captain & leading his team in '09... His coach is quoted as saying he has the speed, moves, & hands of a smaller back for receiver... He's had experience in I-form as well as zone blocking systems... He's been a Buck fan since he was a kid & he's attended multiple camps at OSU over the years... It was pretty much over once OSU offered...
