The reason this entire debate exists is because WW decided that because Lydell didn't live up to the extreme hype put upon all recruits nowadays... and based on one incident at the strip club... he should be considered a chump with no character but rather "a character"

That's the "over-the-top" post that started all of this

Lydell Ross was simply a grotesque under-acheiver.

This was a guy we HAD to have coming out of HS, allegedly "stole" him away from Notre Dame.

Now, as a senior Captain, this guy spent the night that his team was humiliated 33-7 by Iowa in a game that he ran for an amazing "0" yards hanging out in a strip bar.

There is a very fine line between having "great character" and simply being a "character." Decide on your own.
Here's his post, to clarify.

And last time I checked, people with great character are NOTHING like people that are characters. I suppose there is a fine line between Holmes & Clarett then, if your statement is to be believed.

I never claimed he was not without faults. But the guy made a couple of good runs in The Game and finished off his career with an impressive game against OkState that makes us wonder what coudl ahve been.

Tressel did not say that he was a back with tons of talent but too little confidence for nothing.

Was Woody out of line? Probably.
His use of the word "underachiever" was correct though. "Grotesque" was somewhat of an exaggeration, but who doesn't do that to express an opinion? We all do that on a regular basis on this board. What's the point in berating someone for theirs?

I just don't appreciate when people bash on players to an overboard extent. Sure he's been a little bit of a disappointment. But to call his character into question when you know nothing about the guy is overboard IMO

True, although he didn't live up expectations on the field, he seemed to be a solid guy off the field. You never heard anything bad about him.

Sorry for sticking up for a buckeye who put in 4 hard years here. Tho you clearly know nothing of loyalty, Tibor.

Honestly, most of my hostility was towards Tibs and then got redirected at WW after his post...

The way that I see it, "fromscUM" has spent his (?) past 5 replies in this thread calling me out for speaking nothing but the truth. First off, I always liked Ross, never had any problem with him or his work ethic. But, the fact is that the guy accomplished absolutely NOTHING here in his 4 years. He obviously worked hard in the weight room, built himself into a very impressive physical speciman who still couldn't knock over a DB 40 lbs. lighter than him.

I am one of the most leniant poeple in the world as far as giving people "another chance" or the "benefit of the doubt." I defended MC here and on other sites as long as I could, as well as with other players who have found themselves in trouble. But, the Iowa game was the kicker with this guy. I believe it was 14 carries for "0" yards. Maybe I was too tough on Ross, and shouldn't have described his as being a "grotesque underacheiver." BUT, if my assessment of him was wrong, then you "fromscUM" should just go ahead and say the only thing that would prove me wrong, and that's that the guy was just overhyped by all the scouting services and was just simply never a good football player to begin with. If you "suck" you really cant' "underacheive."

This discussion has made me change my viewpoint on the "underachiever" word. I got worked up over the "grotesque" part, and then took up my initial argument on the wrong grounds. Underachiever to me still makes me think of one who doesn't try to reach his potential, but I do see how the word also can mean someone who works hard but doesn't achieve their potential.

Glad to see the discussion normalizing somewhat. I think most of us realize that Lydell put forth solid effort, but for the most part the results were disappointing, as I'm sure they were for Ross.

I'm all for not bashing loyal Buckeyes who give real effort for the team.

I'm also all for not bashing respected posters over semantics or honest differences of opinion.

Both of those previous comments have obvious exceptions, hence the adjectives 'loyal' and 'respected'.

Thats cool with me "BuckFrom."

I actually was a huge fan of Lydell from the time he got here, maybe was just a bit too frustrated with his lack of production over his 4 years. I respected the hell out of the fact that when MC got here he worked his ass off to stay at the front of the mix at the TB spot. The kid was in shape and ready to play every saturday, his efforts sadly did not translate into production on the field. And then, there was that "off the field" fiasco.

Maybe Lydell will be a late bloomer, let's hope so. I wish nothing but the best for any TOSU player who plays here his full 4 years. To me, I respect a guy like Lydell one helluva lot more than I do a guy like Katzenmoyer, but that's another thread for another day. Peace. Dubs.

Agreed. I apologize for calling out woody, particuarly teh manner I did it. I still think grotesque was a little bit much, as you've admitted might be the case, but overall I went overboard. My bad dude.
