RB Lydell Ross (official thread)

As was previously pointed out, Lydell Ross was chosen as a captain for a reason. No, he wasn’t the best running back in <st1 =""><st1 ="">Ohio</st1><st1 =""> State</st1></st1> history but sometimes there are things that don’t show up in the stat column. Yes I would have liked to have seen Ross run the way he did against <st1:state><st1 ="">Indiana</st1></st1:state> and <st1 =""><st1 ="">Oklahoma</st1> <st1 ="">State</st1> </st1>in his final game for the Buckeyes more often but that didn’t happen. For whatever reason he did appear to lose confidence even though he had all the physical tools in the world. <o =""></o>I remember a few years ago at The Horseshoe when Steve Bellisari had made another bad decision with the football and it sounded like 105,000 “fans” started to boo him. Here is some 21 year old kid who is playing under a microscope with every single play analyzed by a bunch of Monday morning quarterbacks. I’m not playing a violin for the guy because he obviously wasn’t exactly the best quarterback ever but I really get sick and tired of watching people who certainly couldn’t do any better then the person they’re booing make deriding comments.

<o =""></o>It is a lot easier for us to sit in the stands or at home on the couch and say “this guy should have done this” or “this guy should have done that” because we don’t have the risk of getting our head caved in by some behemoth play after play after play. I certainly couldn’t have done better then Ross or Bellisari, thus I am not fit to cast derision on them or boo them because that isn’t right in my opinion.

So best of luck to Ross and Bellisari, and my thanks go out to them for giving their all.

Edit: Why am I getting all these smiley faces in my post? I edited them out of there but they keep reappearing. I did copy-and-paste from Microsoft Word, perhaps that has something to do with it?

I wish the best for Lydell Ross in the NFL, I think both him and Maurice Hall will make decent backs, even if its not a starters role. Ross, IMO, needs better vision on the field, seemed he was a cut or two away from a big gain and jsut didnt see the hole opening up out there, but he still was rather effective and with a little bit more coaching, can pan out to be a good player.

Fadeproof -- I truly, truly wish Lydell the best wherever he ends up (hopefully) in the NFL. However, I hope it is not lack of vision that his his bugbear. Its my personal belief that coaching vision is next to impossible in any sport. Either the kid has that vision and you can teach them how to make the best use of it. Or the kid does not have it, so he likely rides the pine more often.
Personally I think Lydell is/was smitten with a mental issue, call it confidence, call it self-belief. He has the tools, when he used them he got yards, good yards - hitting the hole and making a difference. Other times it was like the wind alone could stop him in his tracks, a shame.
There are definitely cases of an athlete overcoming such a mental issue, from baseball the turn-around in years past of Smoltz's career comes to mind. So there is hope for him with the right situation. Realisticallly, whoever takes on LR will have accepted a project -- but sports is full of stories of comeback kids. Perhaps Lydell will be one of those -- I certainly hope so.

i doubt he will become a starter in the NFL but he could become a solid 2nd or 3rd back along the Dorsey Levens type. he would have to improve his pass catching to reach that level but he has a similar style to levens and good be a similar back in the NFL.

Sorry I don't think I've ever seen Levens run up behind the asses of his offensive linemen, completely missing the hole. :roll1:
Tibor's used to guys behind other guys' asses always hitting the hole because he watches way too much gay porn.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. :!

That part I can agree with, teaching vision seems to be pretty tough, I guess it all depends on which team he ends up on(Denver Broncos come to mind). I want him to succeed and wish him the best, and I do think he'll be a capable back-up at least in the NFL.

Lydell FA to the Bengals

TabeyTabe post on BN: " Lydell Ross signs as FA w/Bengals! Just heard it on 700wlw..."

My guess is that he's been formally invited to tryout, or can FA signees be released if they do not perform?

Gosh I love today. I'm happy for Lydell who has worked hard for years to get to this point, but I'm even happier at the thought of Tibor groaning when he receives this news that his beloved Bengals are looking at a buckeye he despises.

OK, Browns or Bengals? The thread title says "Browns" while the post content says "Bengals"...
