RB Erik Haw (official thread)

I still can't believe they wouldn't redshirt Haw with three solid RB's filling the depth chart.

I don't buy the experience factor as Experience isn't as important as it is with the QB position.
There's been quite a few successful Reshman RB's that have had no prior experience.
If Haw is that good then he will be fine when he is forced into playing time because of possible injuries.
If we face no injuries then I believe Pittman Ross and Hall will do a fine job.
Why is a fourth back needed? Why waste a years eligibilty for 25 carries this year?
Doesn't make sense to me.

The reason you burn the redshirt is that you otherwise start next season with exactly ONE tailback with any game experience (Pittman). I agree that unless he moves up the chart this year that he's not going to get the chance to contribute much, but I think that the coaches will manage to find him some carries.

I am not sold on eligibility seperation from Pittman as a reason to redshirt. With any good fortune, we will have a stud Freshman (or two) coming in next year. With only two scholarship tailbacks returning, that Freshman won't be seeing a redshirt, so you'd still end up with guys stacked up in the same class.

I don't know what to think about Lydell just yet. He don't seem to be pushed just yet. He is not playing like he could lose his job at any minute. That tells me he either doesn't care about playing time (which I don't buy) or he feels he is playing to the best of his ability (which scare me cause I think that is true). Is it just me or does he always look winded? after every play he looks tired and like he is dragging (remind you of a certain scUM back?) I want to see some excitement out of the back field and I don't see any emotion out of Ross. The other thing I am noticing is that the announcers keep going on about how fast he is for a big man, but I don't see the speed. Am I the only one? I don't believe he can outrun anyone to the corner and get up the field. Ross had better step up very soon or we are going to lose a few games ugly this year. Sadly, I don't think Tressell is going to make a switch even if he continues to struggle. He is the experienced part of the backfield. I think Tressell is trying to keep away from putting someone out there who doesn't have the experience to tell everyone to calm down. I think losing Fox on defense is going to hurt because of this. Fraiser really needs to start getting vocal and getting this defense to where it needs to go.

We've been waiting to pass judgment on Ross for four years now. I've made my judgment. He doesn't have it.

He can't find holes. He can't get outside. He's hesitant and then makes bad decisions on direction. He runs with his head down and eyes to the turf, not up and ahead looking for daylight. He's just not a very good running back as it turns out. High school phenom who couldn't cut it when it counted in big-time college. It's a shame.

Now put Tony Pittman and Branden Joe in and let's move on.

The nice thing is that Joe should be healthy this week, and if Ivan hits as predicted in another thread, that would be a huge boost. Line up Stan White (or White and Schnittker) in front of Joe and just bulldoze our way downfeild.

Many moons ago college football strength was the run. Remember 3 yards and a cloud of dust? The run was excuted to set up the pass. But now we are seeing that defenses are constructed to quickly shut the run down and still be able to blitz at the same time. And i think that blocking techiques are being changed drastically and maybe even are hard to learn at times. Especially the art of run blocking schemes. I can't believe at the size and strength of these massive lineman that we are seeing in the game today. Three years ago earle Bruce made the statement that in 2001 Ohio State had the worst offensive line that he had ever seen. That really shocked me and i wonder who he was reffering to, coach Tressel or the line coach. Lydell Ross ran behind that line in 2001 in the Indiana game and everybody was hailing him as another Eddie George. Now it seems like alot of us in here are ready to hang Ross in effigy. I did not hear many complaining about his performances last week in the Cincinnati game. Lets cut the man some slack here and give him the benefit that he deserves.

I hope not. It would be a total shame to lose a redshirt on the last game of the regular season. We've burnt a lot of redshirts that would've been nice to hold out (Lyons, Johnson, Hoobler, Gholston, etc.) I hope to keep the rest in the shed.
