RB Erik Haw (official thread)

Pittman showed up lazy and out of shape for the winter workouts, quite disappointing and mind boggling for a guy who otherwise would have basically had to go thru teh motions to land the starting spot this year. He had 5 YPC last year, but something was keeping him off the field at times, and it wasn't just his lack of size or tendency to fumble. He wasn't even taken with the team to MSU. So there have been other minor attitude incidents from what we can gather as outsiders.

Check the winter workouts thread... I think its in there somewhere...

When you hear stories about talented kids lacking effort it's just makes you wonder. The kids just don't get the huge opportunity that is in front of them. They just think, "I'm entitled to all this", and don't want to work for things! This is where great coaches can have the most impact! Change a young mans life around.

i have a great example of this. when we were running double sessions back in the day in high school, a group of 5 seniors would climb up to the top of hte stands during our mid-day break (the locker room was under the stands), then another kid would get a freshman or sophmore to step out the door, where the seniors would dump buckets of ice water on them. Well, one time a coach happened to wander out and get nailed.

We stopped eating went outside and we all ran 40's until "we reach 100 40's, or guys start throwing up." Needless to say the latter was reached first.

when we finally stopped and everyone was struggling to stand up straight, the coach looked at us all and said "You are all better men today because of the work of a few a$$holes".

Needless to say we had no more discipline problems from that day forth.

On the subject of Haw...

In the last year I've heard a lot of fellow Buckeye fans talk like Haw is the savior of our rushing game. I admit that his measurables are impressive and maybe he has looked great in workouts, but he has still never stepped on a college field against a college defense. Don't take this as me bashing Haw or calling him a bust, but I think it'll be nearly impossible for him to reach a lot of the lofty expectations placed on him by people who are obsessed with measurables. Pittman is still our only back with college game experience.

This backfield is young and potentially talented. Unfortunately the floor is as low as the ceiling is high. Pittman was an above average back when he got his chances last year and I have to believe Haw will need to dominate the offseason get the nod. Even if it's close, Tressel will go with the game experience.

I guess I am just trying to warn everyone not to put Haw on a pedestal and then get upset or let down if, as a fresman, he isn't the second coming of (Insert dominating Buckeye RB here). There have been a lot of gameday busts that have been more highly touted players with even better measurables. Until he takes his first snap against an opposing defense, we shouldn't assume he will run away with the job.

...Hope that wasn't too off subject.

I agree people shouldn't get too high on him. I've gotten a little overly excited about him durin gthe offseason but will not be disappointed if in his first year he can't be the RB we've been missing for years.

I'm gonna disagree with you, OB (wow, yet another hated buckeye associated by your name). Pittman does not have the attitude nor apparently the work ethic of Lydell Loss, Justin Zwick and others to whom Tressel was too loyal. I think if Haw is merely good but not great this spring its his job. It would probably still be a 60%-40% breakdown at first, but Pittman does not seem to have a very good track record with JT.

I spent a little time waiiting for the start of the NCAAs by re-watching this year's Michigan game, the Alamo Bowl and the K State Fiesta bowl. What really came across was how effective Brandon Joe was on runs, all quick hitters, (and how often Ryan Hamby, my old student, jumped off sides). That meant he was picking up yards without the benefit of a blocking back. I came to the conclusion that this o-line can be very effective on quick hitters, they just can't block squat on traps, pitch plays and sweeps. If we freeze backers by faking the quick hitter to Joe, maybe the rest of the running game will come back from Oz, or wherever the hell it's been.

Uh, Brandon Joe was a 5th year senior last season...

color me scarlet.

He said trying to save face. "OK, but if we have a big back similar to Joe, we would seem to be able to run quick hitters."

It did strike me in re-watching that, for a team that hadn't been able to run much, they ran very well in those games, especially a big back, especially plays that went right at the other guys d-line.

Actually when you watch it, we struggled big time to run once we got past our own 30. Troy Smith ran really well, but we could not move the ball on the ground very well at all except during the time when we should have had the most trouble, on our own 1. But we had two trips inside the 20 in the first half where we tried to run and got stuffed and ended up with 3 pts. If we could have run, the score would have been at least 48-21. Also we had no ability to move the ball on the ground when we went conservative.

So while we looked improved, we still need some work on our OL. Don't look at the Alamo Bowl. The big12, and especially OkState do not play good defense. I think the alamo bowl was good blocking, but their D was atrocious.

Just thought I'd give a little break down of teams running vs Michigan when QB rushes are taken out of the stats. I believe these # are accurate.
