RB Erik Haw (official thread)

We need a vbet on who the starting RB will be for game 1 next year. I haven't seen Haw or Wells play at all, but I'm leaning towards Haw over Pittman right now just from what I heard about them when they came in. The spring game will be huge for these 2 this year.
i bet it all on Chris Wells!

Reacting to rumblings from message boards - and in particular BN - is unfair to these kids. It is sometimes - but not often - true. Let's not speculate as though it was.
Agreed. Suggesting such an occurance is possible often leads to a wildfire on the internet. We try to allow everyone major leeway around here, but we treading on thin right now fellas.

Let's leave the rumors to the Rumor Mill.

Pitt and Haw went through some freshman adjustments...nothing more, nothing less.

The "rumblings" on Pittman aren't rumor, those are true. He missed/was late for a few team meetings and wasn't exactly an ideal student. He didn't travel for one game and didn't play in another purely for disciplinary reasons. EJ isn't a bad comparison. Good kid out of a good family that gets to OSU, plays early, and starts thinking they're better than anyone, ever, and are entitled to everything.

Haw's issues (from what I know) aren't nearly so bad. He came out of a poor highschool both in academics and competition. He didn't adjust to college life/classes as quickly as some, and it took him even longer to adjust to football. Later in the year the word was he hit his stride on both accounts and was progressing quickly. IMO, he's the starter by midseason next year. If Pittman doesn't grow up in a hurry, he's probably the starter from day one.

That's what I've been hearing (reading) as well. I hope both Pittman & Haw have their @$#& together by september or Wells may be starting.

I wonder what the chances would be of Wells playing. We're going to have such a young running game, that unless somebody steps up, we might have to. I'm worried about how inexperienced the backfield is going to be this year, especially with what we have to face in game 2 of the year. At least I think this years line is going to give whoever is back there some huge holes and give the QB time to throw. Should be the best O-line in a few years.

If I'm Texas I throw the book at us on blitzes. Inexperienced RBs and a QB that started half a year (no matter who starts) could lead to a lot of sacks or mistakes. I'm really hoping Pittman and Haw have learned to pick up blitzes and that our playcalling helps take some pressure off.

I'm not expecting Maurice to play much this year unless we have some injuries. He's quite small and while he's fast, so is Haw.

The Haw Factor

Do you guys really think he'll be a breakout RB next year? I haven't heard much of his playmaking ability... just his ridiculous 40 time.

Maybe I missed a video or two, but why the high expectations?

At a Glance:
One of three running backs in the incoming freshman class ... combines size, speed and power with great intensity ... put up big numbers in high school against good competition and the coaching staff is anxious to see him in action on the collegiate level ... was clocked at a warp-like 4.21 in the 40-yard dash at the Ohio State summer camp prior to his senior season at Independence and immediately got everyone's attention ... rated as the top running back in the Midwest (five state region) by SuperPrep, which rated him as the 11th best running back in the nation ... rated as the 18th best running back in the nation by Prep Football Report ... rated as the 58th best overall prospect in the country by TheInsiders.com ... Rivals.com rated him as the 24th best running back in the nation ... rushed for 3,038 yards - sixth best in Ohio history - and scored 30 touchdowns as a senior, averaging over 8 yards per carry ... shared Ohio Division II Offensive Player of the Year honors ... rushed for 1,271 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior ... also a track standout at Independence, running the 100 and 200-meter dashes and participating with the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400-meter relay teams.

From High School - Last time he played regularly -

Erik Haw, running back, Columbus Independence-This guy came out of nowhere this past summer to get an OSU offer and soon after verbaled to the Buckeyes over Michigan. In six games, he has 1,288 yards on 188 carries with 12 touchdowns. Independence is 4-2. He has logged 30 or more carries five times, making him a real workhorse back. Only knock is he is up against Columbus City League competition. High game was 306 yards and four touchdowns.

From the North South Game (South beat North)
Erik Haw, an Ohio State signee from Columbus Independence, sealed the South's win with TD runs of 1 and 3 yards in the fourth quarter. Haw finished with 80 yards rushing on 13 carries.

I saw this game and liked Haw's demonstration of speed around the corner, and his power runs. As I recall, however, he did get stuffed 2 or 3 times down near the goal line. I'm sure the strength guys have been working on Haw's legs.

Audibles: "Erik is just such a quality kid that doesn't talk much or bring a lot of attention to himself. He's also a great team player. On the bus after a big game, I saw him get up and personally thank each lineman for blocking so well that night. You don't see stuff like that very often. He will sacrifice or do anything for the benefit of the team. He also has a tremendous work ethic. If I told him to run through a brick wall he would probably try to find a way to do it, and wouldn't quit until he did." -Coach Jones, Columbus Independence High School

Erik Haw, Columbus, Ohio(Independence) ATH. 6-0, 210, 4.3 speed. Phenomenal athlete who could play RB, WR, LB or DB at the next level. Played safety, FB and TB as a junior. Cousin of Minnesota '03 recruit Justin Valentine. Blazing speed. Has the body/size/speed of an ideal Big Ten TB. 3.0 GPA. Not much national recognition until he posted 40 times of 4.28 and 4.21 at Ohio State's camp. Upside is off the charts.

There you go, I don't know if that helps you at all. I was looking for game stats from his Sr. season but have not been able to find them. I know one game he had 4 carries for 189 and 4 TD's, and VG saw him run for 258 according to VG's website. Oh Yeah, to answer your question, YES! I think Haw could have a break out season next year.

e-haw was a better athlete coming out of high school while pittman was a much more polished tailback.

throw in the early start and that gave pittman the edge that year.

now it is up to the players to take whatever they can from the coaches and run with it.

pittman was the safer bet, e-haw has the higher ceiling.

if EH gets a crack he is dangerous. if i get crack, i am equally dangerous but in a whole different way.

Hey tyrone, by the look of the white on those lips, it looks like you smoke other four-letter things that end in "ock"...

I think Haw could really open some eyes this season if he picks up the system and avoids the injury bug. He came here at 210, but I'd be shocked if he isn't 220+ after a year in our strength and conditioning program. A back who is 220+ and runs a sub-4.3 fourty obviously has massive potential.

Gotta wonder if he puts up 10 plus lbs that he keeps that sub 4.3 speed....
