RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

Saints Tried To Get Beanie

Posted by Mike Florio on April 25, 2009, 10:49 p.m. EDT

In a Saturday press conference following the selection of cornerback Malcolm Jenkins with the 14th overall pick in the draft, Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis conceded that the team tried to get back into the bottom of round one.

The target? Ohio State running back Beanie Wells.

?We thought we had a pretty good opportunity at a couple of points in the back half of the draft and it ended up not happening,? Loomis said. ?That?s kind of disappointing at the time, but we couldn?t be happier than we are right now to have Malcolm on our team.?

The Cardinals selected Wells with the 30th overall pick.

Because the Saints had sent their second-round pick and fifth-round pick to the Giants for Jeremy Shockey, they likely would have had to give up at least a first-round pick in 2010 for a shot at getting back into the bottom of round one.

Their interest in Wells suggests that they might be looking at running backs on day two. Remaining tailbacks include Shonn Greene of Iowa, Cedric Peerman of Virginia, Andre Brown of N.C. State, Gartrell Johnson of Colorado State, Javon Ringer of Michigan State, and Jeremiah Johnson of Oregon.

The Saints have only three more picks ? two fourth-rounders and a seventh-rounder.
I think he would've been a better fit with the Saints. But he'll do fine in Arizona. He won't get too much of a burden there, and he'll have weapons around him to keep defenses off-balance.

Congrats Beanie. :)

count me as one that was surprised to see him as the third back taken in the draft. It makes some sense when you look at the systems that the backs taken before Beanie were selected into.

I was a little surprised that Moreno was taken so high, too. The Eagles apparently expected him to be around at 20 (or wherever they picked, 20,21, whatever).

It's ok though. Beanie is on a Super Bowl contender.

Great spot for Beanie. Edge is getting old and Hightower is not a fulltime NFL back. It appears Boldin isn't going anywhere either, so that will be a potent offense for him to operate in. Really excited to see what he can do there.

The Cardinals are my new favorite NFL team. [censored] you Bengals. You can keep your NFL trojans. [censored] off.

Here's to Beanie erasing the horrible memories from that stadium.

Yes I love it.... the door is open everyone :)

All my prays have been answered. A feature running back, and none other than one of my all-time favorite Buckeyes. I don't buy jerseys. But, will be getting a Wells Cardinals one. It's going to be a great fit, Warner has to be thrilled, Beanie will take so much pressure off of him.

No matter whether Shanahan was ther or McDaniels now, I think Moreno makes more sense for those systems. The zone blocking scheme works great for runners who aren't freaks of nature athletically and we saw how important a true running back who takes 25+ handoffs a game was to McDaniels in NE. They needed a good recieving back, and Moreno is a tested back with recieving, while Beanie showed he could do it, it's not his forte. Yeah it was probably too high, but I think it fits the new Broncos system. Still Beanie is by far the best of the backs this year, and he will prove it with the cards

Lots of talk on Arizona sports talk radio that the Cardinals might want to take Beanie. Obviously they need a higher draft pick than their 31st pick, but they want to get a lower pick with the trade of Boldin.

I guess the Cards didn't need to trade down to get him. Hopefully that toe is all healed up and he's ready to kick some ass because he should get a lot of carries with the Cards. Welcome to Arizona Beanie!! Glad to have him in town!
