RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

I love Beanie & I love the Bengals (sick, I know) but I hate this pick for all. With the Bengals just resigning Cedric Benson and picking up Gary Russell off waivers from the Steelers, the Bengals better grab the best O-lineman available with pick #6...yes, even if Andre Smith and his "issues" is the remaining tackle of the "big three".

Then they better grab the best available Center with their 2nd round pick.

If Cincinnati ever wants to get better, they have to address the o-line in this draft in a MAJOR way...minimum 3 / maybe 4 of their 11 picks, and definitely the first 2 imo if they stay put at those positions.

...and I'd hate to see Beanie put in a situation where the Bungles line just lets him get killed game after game.

my thoughts exactly

Beanie Wells' agent rejects reports of injury concerns for former OSU star back
by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter
Tuesday April 21, 2009

CLEVELAND -- The agent for Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells disputed a report on SI.com that teams are backing away from Wells because of concern over a sesamoid bone in his foot.
A native of Akron who visited the Browns last week, Wells is projected to go in the middle of the first round of Saturday's NFL draft.

A sesamoid bone is small bone embedded in a joint capsule or tendon. Wells originally suffered the toe injury in the season opener against Youngstown State and missed three games. But he still rushed for almost 1,200 yards and eight touchdowns.

"Beanie was examined by [orthopedic surgeon] Dr. James Andrews in January and was given a clean bill of health," said agent Adam Heller. "There are no issues with the toe and he's 100 percent. He rushed for 1,200 yards and has since posted the best broad jump at the combine and a 4.38 in the 40 at his pro day."

What's more, Heller said, "Beanie has not had the issue raised by any team during his individual workouts or team visits. Based on the conversations I've had with teams, it's a non-issue."

Q&A with RB Chris "Beanie" Wells
April 21, 2009

Beaniesub500.jpg

Ohio State University running back Chris ?Beanie? Wells is amongst the best players at his position. Read what he had to say to the media at the NFL Combine.

Q: Why did you come out as a junior?
A: A lot of guys were leaving and we made a run at the national championship two years in a row. We came back, a lot of guys wanted to make that second run at a national championship. We tried and came up short. All in all it was a decision made by me and my family and I think it was the best thing for me to do.

Q: How?s your health?
A: My foot's great. I feel 100 percent, completely, my whole body feels healthy. I haven't really been talking with any teams about what they thought of it yet.

Q: How do you compare to other running backs in the Draft?
A: I don't really compare our styles at all. We're completely different running backs. The competitive nature in me is always going to tell myself I'm the best running back. I definitely want to be the best running back off the board.

Q: Which NFL running backs have you looked up to?
A: A lot of guys. The Adrian Peterson?s, the Marshall Faulk?s, the Jim Brown?s, I look up to all those guys. But I wouldn't try to compare myself to anybody because I want to have my own style.

Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I guess it's kind of hard to describe. I want to be that back who can take it the distance like a scatback or a back who can get the tough yards like a hard-nosed short-yardage back.

I've been reading Michael Lombardi of The National Football Post for a few months now. Has some really good insights.

Who is the best player you have played against?
Every time I talk to a player, I always ask who the best player was they played against in their career. I keep a list, and often the names are not the same. But when the same name seems to come up all the time, I make sure I do more work on that player. This year, it seems like Ohio States’ Chris “Beanie” Wells is the winner. His combination of speed, power and size seems to have players in awe.

Ohio State football: Beanie Wells calls injury report a smoke screen
by Doug Lesmerises
Wednesday April 22, 2009

Mary Kay Cabot already addressed the report of Beanie Wells having a problem with a bone in his foot by talking with Wells' agent, but the former Ohio State running back took on the topic himself today on "Jim Rome is Burning" on ESPN.

Wells said no team had asked him about that issue, reportedly a sesamoid bone embedded in one of the joints in his foot.

"Nah, no team expressed that concern," Wells told host Jim Rome. "I heard rumors, I heard a lot of rumors about that issue. You know, I guess it would be a big thing if teams weren't talking about me.

"I heard it was an issue I had a bad bone in my foot. I think it was just something started for teams to get me to slide into their lap."

So Rome asked if Wells really thought the talk was a smoke screen by teams hoping to get him to drop to them.

"Definitely, I definitely think it's a smoke screen. I was cleared by Dr. (James) Andrews down in Florida, and he's one of the biggest doctors in the National Football League. And he cleared me and I feel as if I'm good to go."

Beanie

What a lovable kid! How can you not love to have him on your team? I am proud of the way he is handling those negative talks - JT taugh him well. I definitely will follow which ever team drafts him...I hope it is my Eagles trading up to get him of course.

i don't believe a team or scout would float a bogus rumor about a bone Beanie's foot to make him slide in the draft.

Just like i doubt a team selecting in the 15-20 range would float a rumor that Malcolm lacks elite speed to be a productive player in the NFL.

These things don't happen.

I am sure you are talking with a heavy dose of sarcasm, bmac. I never put you in the naive camp, but just in case you are, take a deep breath and relax, and I have some carbon credits to sell you to mitigate your impact.
