Running back Beanie Wells will not play against Ohio on Saturday, Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel said on his radio show today.
Tressel said Wells is progressing with his rehab but has not practiced, so therefore he will not play. Wells is expected to return for the Sept. 13 game at No. 1 Southern Cal.
On Wednesday, Wells did attend team meetings and riding an exercise bike on the side during practice.
Tressel said this week the injury on the pad of his right foot at the base of his big toe. Tressel also said he did not know the medical diagnosis.
"You can make it worse if you make the pain worse," Tressel said this week. "And that's a limiting factor in his ability to participate and function really well," Tressel said. "You do have the concern about further injury, whether it's soft tissue or whatever it is, because there's a point, no matter how tough he is, that's his bread and butter, to put his foot on the ground and run."
Tressel said Wells was in and out of his protective boot, and he hoped his player was following protocol.
"I would just as soon have him in the boot all time," Tressel said, "because that is going to take as much pressure off as possible."
