Ohio State notebook: Wells' status still unknown
If tailback doesn't practice, he'll likely sit out Ohio game

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
As of yesterday after practice, Ohio State tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells had not been ruled out of playing Saturday against Ohio University -- but that could come today if he doesn't practice. "I'd have to say that to play a lot he'd have to practice full speed ahead," running backs coach Dick Tressel said. "So this week I'd be surprised if we'd see him more than just a little bit, because maybe he can run (today) and run fast Friday but that would be throwing him into a situation where he wasn't prepared well.
"That I would rather not do. We want to make sure Beanie can do what Beanie can do before we ask him to do something."
Wells suffered a right foot injury Saturday against Youngstown State, and Tressel described it yesterday as a jammed big toe and forefoot. Wells has not been made available to speak to the media since before the game.
Wells was outside during practice, but "he was not participating in drills," Tressel said. Instead, he rode a stationary bike on the sideline and did a few other nonrunning, noncontact drills as directed by the conditioning staff.
That activity was a far cry from the third quarter Saturday, when he reached for a handoff and then fell to the ground in agony. Tressel recalled the moment vividly.
