RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

Percy is now a little over 200 pounds, ripped, and bench pressing a pile of iron. We are far more likely to use him as a tailback this year than as a race horse guy we get the ball to in space.

So I agree with you, which is why I said "could", conditioned on his foot not getting reinjured and his new strength and weight being used to make him an every down back.
So, in your mind he is #2 running back in the nation, but could give Beanie a run for his money?

I think that Beanie is unquestionably the number one traditional running back and the leading prospective Heisman candidate for 2008.

I think that a healed, injury free and stronger Harvin will be - in my biased mind - Beanie's leading running back competitor for the Heisman.

Admittedly Percy is not used in a traditional running back mode, he is used more as a slot guy/WR. That said, I have extremely high hopes for Harvin this year, and I think that he will get an incredible amount of touches and be in the thick of the Heisman race.

Oh. And I think you should grow a thicker skin.

It is just an interesting theory, and your argument of your "high hopes" does nothing to advance it.

And for a second I thought you went a whole post without a jab. Silly me. :ohwell:

I think he could he be a hell of a back if they use him more, but he won't be the second best running back in the nation purely because he won't get the touches with the backfield the Gators have.

That is probably the more realistic and practical way to look at it Big..... but three things can affect that:

1) My huge homer bias, :tongue2: and
2) If "best" is determined by Heisman voting, Harvin might get more votes than you think if he is featured in our offense (at Tim's Heisman ceremony Urban was reported to have told Percy "You're next" - and while an outrageous claim, Urban is prone to giving the ball to the player he trusts most...even if they know its coming. He says Tim won't carry it as much this year - that leaves Percy) and
3) SEC Bias from the voters - if UF gets to the BCS Championship Game, it will likely be because we score huge numbers of points to get there (won't be our D) - and Harvin will have a big hand in it if it happens.

Understood, I just personally don't think he will have the touches for the numbers, and there are players who would have to lose the Heisman for Harvin to win it.

Morning Briefing: Is Beanie Wells the next Jim Brown?

July 30, 2008 8:04 AM

Hope you enjoyed Hater Tuesday. There will be a little carry-over today, as I
boldly make predictions on the league's top rivalries. But first, here's a look at
what's happening around the league.

High praise for Ohio State's Beanie Wells from two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin,
who thinks the junior running back is "the closest thing to Jim Brown that I've ever seen,"
The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Doug Lesmerises writes in his blog.

Beanie: I'm trying to think of the last running back who had such a vicious stiff arm, but I can't think of anyone. Anyone have any suggestions?

Harvin: I like that he's bulked up a bit and I hope he stays healthy. Guy reminds me of a Reggie Bush type guy - great in the open field, but struggles between the tackles. I know that's a lofty comparison, but I don't think it's unfair. If Emmanuel Moody can give the Gators and every down type guy, Harvin will become very, very dangerous coming out of the backfield.

Moody isn't the answer - at least, not from what we've seen. Harvin is a WR with a bigger frame, not much more too it. You can compare that to KW2, who is as big as most TE's but the work of a slot receiver.

No disrespect to Harvin, because he is an amazing athlete; but I consider a true RB to be able to operate in all the facets of the job. Have him line up power-I, run in-between tackles, be able to operate with shotgun formations, catch passes out of the backfield etc etc.
Some of those he does very well (and when I say very well, I mean dangerous as anything) Other's... not so much, mainly because of the system he's playing under.

Fact is, the Gator's haven't really devoted (IMHO) the time necessary to develope and/or recruit an every down back. Sure you have Tebow in short yardage situations, but how many times is he going to carry the ball and not wear down? More importantly, how many times will it be until the opposition realizes that when the Gators line him up with split backs in the red zone, majority of the time he's getting the carry?

I'm just waiting for a DE to slip around and break his leg, because its that easy to lose your season and your QB.

anyway, back to Beanie.....

Can you say, Heisman?!?

Buckeneye, I have no inside info at all, but I suspect that Kestahn Moore will be used more than Moody, and if that is so, I see him used as a fulback, as his blocking is much better than Moody et al...

So I guess I see Harvin and Rainey used as our everyday backs, and at about 205, Harvin being used in more traditional roles. We'll see.

If Timmy goes down, God knows what we'll do.

As to Beanie, I am old enough to have seen Jim Brown play, and his stiff-arm was used as a battle club. Beanie reminds me of him.

I'll see if I can find some things about Moore, but if Tebow goes down - pray you sir your pass defense answers the call. I think some high school teams would have found the end-zone against last years secondary

Rainey, his routes aren't very clean from what I've seen, but he's another kid who scares the living shit out of me should we see you in Jan.

Between him and Harvin, you have probably the best combination of WR's in the nation -

.... of course we said the same about Ginn and Gonzo but that didnt get far when it counted most.

It's tought to know now. Harvin hasn't even been practicing with backs, but you should see who starts getting the reps when contact arrives.
