RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

ESPN - What's hot (and not) for 2008 - College Football

HOT

Tailbacks: Ohio State's Beanie Wells. Georgia's Knowshon Moreno. Clemson's James Davis and C.J. Spiller. West Virginia's Noel Devine. Pitt's LeSean McCoy. Oklahoma's DeMarco Murray. USC's Joe McKnight. Odds are good that one of them will take home the Heisman Trophy.

Ohio State: Beanie Wells. James Laurinaitis. Malcolm Jenkins. Terrelle Pryor. Jim Tressel. Sweater vests. The Buckeyes seem armed for a third straight appearance in a BCS title game -- if they can get past USC on Sept. 13.

Some comments from Marcus Freeman about facing Beanie in practice.

ozone

Not Fun: Football practice is not always a fun thing in which to participate, but according to Marcus Freeman there is one particular thing the OSU defense has to cope with that is especially not fun.

"Going against Beanie is not the funnest thing to do a lot of times," said Freeman.

"He's a big guy and he's a powerful guy. To get a look like that from a back that we feel is the best in the nation is good for this team."

Freeman says (surprise!) Beanie's stiffarm is something that makes an instant impression on any defender, even at practice.

"He's used it on me quite a few times. I haven't seen anything like it," said Freeman.

"I think Beanie in the top five or ten in strength on this whole team including linemen.

"To have that with the speed, it's something he's perfected.

"When he puts it out there it's hard to go through it and make a tackle," Freeman said.

Beanie is the best all round back in college football. Percy Harvin is #2 in my biased mind, but having gained weight and strength in the off season, and if his surgery has cured his chronic foot problems, Percy could give him a run for his money.

What a great time to be a Buck or Gator. We are both living in our program's Golden Age - right now!

Clearly biased, Brandon Saine is the second best back in College football.

Everyone knows that.

From a pure "back" perspective I am not sure that I agree here. Percy seems to me as more of a receiver playing in the backfield. It's kind of like when you play a video game and move a really fast receiver to running back just because the defense can't catch him. Harvin is an electric type player, but he's not the kind of guy that a team will lean on to run out the clock in a tight ballgame.

I am surprised that there was no mention of P.J. Hill on that list above......I think he's a damn good tailback if he stays healthy.

Percy is now a little over 200 pounds, ripped, and bench pressing a pile of iron. We are far more likely to use him as a tailback this year than as a race horse guy we get the ball to in space.

So I agree with you, which is why I said "could", conditioned on his foot not getting reinjured and his new strength and weight being used to make him an every down back.

Not everyone. Javon Ringer thinks Javon Ringer is the best back in college football. Beanie couldn't carry Javon Ringer's jock, Javon Ringer thinks.
