RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

I hope Tressel doesn't care about statistics. A coach's job is to win football games. Leave the nerdy statistics to us fans.

He does it for the players, like most coaches do. If a player is close to setting a record or reaching a milestone, coaches will keep them in a little longer or tweak their playcalling a little to help the player get his stats.

We only get C Wells for two more years. If the coaches believe Beanie can reach ~25 consecutive 100-yard games and a Heisman in 2008, you throw him a bone when he's sitting on 94.

I wouldn't want the players playing scared, and I don't want to see the coaches coaching scared either. I didn't have any problem with it.

I think it had more to do with Tressel going into halftime stating that the starters would start the 3rd quarter.

Sometimes you don't take the starters out too early or else they'll lose their edge.

It sucks Beanie got dinged up, but having Boeckman get another series under his belt, especially after having a halftime when he's up 45-0 and having to continue with his focus on the game can't be a bad thing.....

Beanie Injury Update

I read this over at buckeyfansonly.com, cited from USA Today article:

Jim Tressel and Wells both said the ankle was fine, and that he didn't return because the score was so out of hand. Still, the alarming part was when Wells admitted the ankle is still bothering him:

"Sometimes it does (hurt), sometimes it doesn't," Wells said. "Mainly when I cut, (it hurts)."

Is his condition worse than we have been led to believe? :(

If it's still sore by Saturday, keep him out and give it more time to heal.. Simple as that. Ohio State isn't playing Penn State, Wisconsin, or Michigan this week, they can afford to have him rest the ankle for a week.

Marcus Williams ran pretty well in the few carries he had Saturday. Between Mo Wells and Marcus, we'll have enough RB horsepower for Minnesota...besides, with Minnesota's 400+ ypg pass defense, we'll be throwing the ball most of the time anyways.

I have no problem with Wells being in the game. The coaches can and should play whoever they want. I don't like the idea of being up 28-0 only 10 minutes into the game, and the coaches say to get the starters out. Let them play.

I guess for moral reasons you want to let your players be happy about a 100-yard game. Or let them continue a streak of 400 straight 100-yard games, or whatever. Or if he's getting close to breaking a record. Whatever. I guess that isn't so bad. I just don't think it's such a good idea for a coach to say, "Run Beanie some more, because if he breaks a long run, his average will be 6.5 ypc." I don't like it. If a coach says, "Beanie's average is 6.5 ypc - keep running it," then that's fine with me. It's showing that the coaches are using his stats to show that he's likely to help the Buckeyes win.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that coaches can look at statistics to a degree. But it shouldn't take them away from their true goal: to win this game, and the next one. With Ohio State up 174-0 in the third quarter, I have no problem with Wells in the game or out. But I don't see how his 100-yard game was going to help Ohio State get the W at that point.
