RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

They noted during the game that they took the ice off the ankle by the end of the game, and he had his shoe back on. They also said that they might not know the true situation until tomorrow morning.

My only question is: Why did we still have him in the game? I think we were up by 38 points in the second half and Northwestern clearly had no fight left in them. I'd hate losing our 1/2 punch in the same week. I was suprised at how long the 1st team remained in there.

Just a couple guesses...

1.) Its still early in the season and the starters still need experience playing together before we get into the big games.

2.) With how weak our schedule is looking (lack of a huge OOC game, and the Big 10 having a down year) we need to look impressive even in easy wins.

(Again, just a couple ideas that would seem to make sense to me.)

the announcers on espn also noted that usually it's normal to have starters in for at least the first drive after kick off. also, remember this was after northwestern ran one back 99 yards, so maybe tressel just wanted to get things under control again.

For what its worth, the ESPN game recap called Beanie's injury an ankle sprain.

Not worth much. A high ankle sprain could be a real problem. You just can't tell yet how bad it was. I hope not it's not much of a problem because Mo Wells can't be a successful #1 back for us. Also, I don't want to miss an extended period of Beanie playing traditional OSU football.

I think can't is a misleading word here. I think Mo Wells can be a feature back if need be, but we'd have to use play calling that would benefit him. That being said I hope this isn't the case, because the Bucks are starting to get confidence in thier current system and I would like to see that continue. But either way just hopin Beanie gets better you hate to see such a determined, hard working young man like Beanie get hurt.

mo wells is not very good...so many runs for losses. he just dances around too much in the backfield. not to mention, more importantly, he can't hold on to the ball.

It doesn't help that the defense knew we were running the ball. I'm afraid that Dick Tressel may have meddled a little too much with Maurice. Coming out of high school, Mo' was known for his lateral quickness and cutback ability. It looks like he's gotten to the point where he doesn't even look for the cutback anymore. There were several times in todays game where he had opportunities to bounce it out for big gains but didn't.

It doesn't help when he's routinely met by multiple defenders 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage. I also don't place too much blame on him for that fumble. The NU player got a hat on it which makes it extremely hard to keep a hold of.

Beanie says ankle injury nothing to worry about

Maurice Wells dives over the pile to score a touchdown. He had 44 yards on 15 carries and scored twice.

Tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells said it loud and clear: If Ohio State had needed him, he could have returned to the game yesterday.
That is probably soothing news to fans who watched the sophomore limp out after his first carry of the third quarter in a 58-7 win over Northwestern. He had just rolled his left ankle at the end of a 6-yard gain, which gave him 100 yards for the day, his third straight game at or above that mark.
Once he got to the sideline, Wells' injury looked serious, especially the way the training staff and medical personnel hovered over him, cutting away the spats over his left shoe, then the tape around the ankle before wrapping the joint in ice.
"I'm fine, I just rolled it a little bit," said Wells, who carried 12 times and had a 36-yard scoring run in the second quarter. "If it was a critical situation where I had to play the whole game, I could have done so."

That idea makes sense to me. Ohio State had a 4-touchdown lead only 10 minutes into the game. Do you only play your starters for 10 minutes? That doesn't seem like enough time to get them to "get to know" each other in the game. I'd imagine that playing the game together is as important as actual playing time. Get your players to play together when you get the chance.

I hope that isn't it. Jim Tressel isn't the type to give a rat's ass what the media or polls say about him or Ohio State. He knows the only thing that's important is this week's game, regardless of which week "this" week is.

I heard that. You don't want to let Northwestern keep anything that even resembles momentum.

I think they wanted to get him to 100 yds on the day. He was at 94 yds at halftime, and they gave him a carry right away on the first drive of the 3rd quarter. That's my guess, anyway.

I hope Tressel doesn't care about statistics. A coach's job is to win football games. Leave the nerdy statistics to us fans.
