Ohio State expects Wells to bounce back against Akron

Thursday, September 06, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Last time we saw Beanie Wells, he was calling himself terrible. That was after Saturday's win over Youngstown State, when he had 46 yards on 16 carries and struggled for positive yards near the end zone.
The fact that no player was named as the OSU offensive lineman of the week was a clear indication that the problems in the running game weren't restricted to one player. But the extent of Beanie's bounce back ability will be on display Saturday against Akron.

Wells carries loads
Ohio State tailback known for expecting a lot of himself

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As Paulette Wells listened to her son pour his heart out, she worried.

She realized that Chris "Beanie" Wells was putting too much pressure on himself. He was trying too hard to replace someone who had recently left, taking on way too much responsibility in that person's absence.

Wells, an Ohio State tailback, spent much of the postgame last week lamenting his lack of focus after gaining just 46 yards on 16 carries against Youngstown State. More was expected from the sophomore after taking over the lead role from Antonio Pittman, who in January had declared for the NFL draft.

Will Wells bounce back? It's one of the biggest questions for No. 12 Ohio State today against Akron.

But the incident Paulette was worried about occurred months earlier and had nothing to do with sports.

It dealt with her separation from Beanie's father, James, in December. That left Paulette as the breadwinner for her large family (six kids, four still at home).

"(Beanie) said, 'Mom, I can give you my (scholarship) money to help you buy school clothes,' " Paulette recalled. "He's just that kind of kid. He's got such a big heart. He carries the weight of the world on his shoulders.

"I told him, 'Beanie, that's not your job. Your job is to worry about football.' "

Look at Beanie's arm where the akron player is squeezing. Looks pretty weird.

I really think that the last drive he was in where he busted a couple big ones, was exactly what he needed, and you could see the stregnth and drive of his legs. No matter how much potential you have, a game in which you are critical about yourself (YSU) is on your psyche until you fix it. I think Beanie's going to be punishing from here on out.

we need Beanie to come through next week thats for sure! I don't know about everyone else but today Beanie was spectacular however Saine/Wells looked lost. I would love to see all three backs have solid games. Beanie really was hungry today and even on the occasions where he was stopped for a yard or so he still showed so much fight and was just driving as hard as he could. Great effort today Beans!

Beanie's play in the 2nd half was what we have all expected of him. He showed nice speed to the outside on a few carries and good strength and power up the middle. The stiff arm was a classic. He just threw the guy down like he was a sack of trash being put out on the curb.
