COLUMBUS, Ohio ? If Carlos Hyde had been charged by Columbus police, he would have been kicked off the Ohio State football team.
That's what OSU coach Urban Meyer told reporters at ESPN today. Meyer and the other Big Ten coaches are making the rounds in Bristol on several shows. Police declined to file charges against Hyde on Tuesday after he had been named as a person of interest in a potential assault at a Columbus nightclub. They closed the case after the alleged victim said she did not want to press charges. Meyer, in a statement, suspended Hyde for three games on Tuesday night. Meyer has not addressed the issue with Ohio media.
In an interview on ESPN's SportsCenter, Meyer said of the Hyde case, ?the average person on the street, from what investigators told me, it's nothing. It's move on, there are no charges, there would be no charges. But it's a high-profile player representing the university.?
So, according to ESPN reporter Brett McMurphy, Hyde's punishment came because he did not walk away from the situation. As seen on surveillance from the club, Hyde gestured at the woman, she reached out in an attempt to strike him and Hyde responded. It's unclear from the tape if anyone was hit.
?Our players are taught to walk away,? Meyer said, according to McMurphy.
Meyer reiterated his zero tolerance for violence toward women and said that any player charged in a domestic violence issue would be dismissed from the team. Hyde was not charged, so Meyer had a decision to make on his punishment.
?I had to be very careful,? Meyer said on SportsCenter. ?I actually talked to several people I have great respect for. I think it's the right decision. We sent a message to our team and we did the right thing.?
