RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

I think it's fairly obvious that Coach Tress has finally figured out that in 4 out of the past 6 seasons (or so) our Offensive success can be directly linked to having a fullback named Brandon lining up in the backfield.

Now that we've corrected that little issue...LET THE FLOOD GATES OPEN!

P.S.

It will be kinda funny having our Tailback nicknamed "Boom" and our Fullback nicknamed "Zoom"

Brandon Smith has been playing fullback all year

Smart move IMO... A serious question here, when did Saine show flashes?? He played pretty good against Washington but thats about all. IMO not to put him down he's never SHONE he has "IT" Spare me the injury problem because he's had plenty of time to heal up and besides Beanie is playing on one foot and that hasn't changed his style... To me Brandon has always seemed like a dude with TONS of speed but never knew how to use it.

Brandon is a good blocker, exceptonal catching the ball, and has pretty good size (220). The only thing Brandon lacks as a true running back is fluid hips and vision, things that a fullback don't need. Great move by the staff! The fullback often is one on one with the linebackers in man coverage and I for one look forward to seeing LB's chasing #3 down the field.

You gotta have playmakers at every position. I love the idea of him getting him on the field more and allowing him more chances to catch the ball in space, which seems to be his forte at this level. He can run under everybody's radar at FB and he would be a mismatch for basically anyone because of that speed. I'll have to watch him more often when he's blocking, because I can't seem to remember how well he blocks. Hopefully he's better at it than B.Smith.

You know he was destined for this position. Every time he fields a kick, he runs straight into the first 3 guys coming down the field from the other team.

I really like this move. His biggest plays, as stated earlier, have always been from when he runs straight forward. Add some wait on that frame and his already above average power will benefit his awesome straight-line track speed. He can also catch a pass, and TP loves passing to his fullback.

I think this move will benefit both Brandon and the Buckeyes thoroughly.

Will we see Brandon in this new position against Northwestern? I hope so, he's one of my favorites on this team and completely underutilized.

Hester from LSU would line up in the Fullback position and was VERY effective both running the ball and catching the ball down field. IF things click with Brandon at the Fullback position, and the coaches use him wisely, it could really add a nice dimension to the Offense.

He has similar measurables to Stanley Havili.

I think Havili's got about 15lbs on Saine, but neither are ever going to be traditional FBs. It's all about having an extra receiver who can get lost in the shuffle. Saine's not going to be asked to block a DE or MLB on every play, at least, I hope not.

He will not stick at FB.

What a silly decision. You want to put a former track star, 220 pounder at fullback?

Keep in mind, the best FB in the last 3 years has been a walk on former offensive lineman. Not a guy whom we thought would be a slot receiver.

But like I said before, Saine will not stick at FB. I'll put anything on it.

Smith has made some nice catches for nice gains this year. Imagine if he were a former track star who had the speed to get into the secondary before the LBs tackled him. I think it would be silly to use him as the full-time FB. But I don't think it's a bad idea at all to trot him out there in situations that aren't obviously running situations.

I have a feeling we'll see some big plays from Saine as a FB.

Where do you think he'll stick then?? I mean it's not at tailback so forget about that. With Herron coming back and Berry/Hyde/Hall coming in his minutes would be crap.

220 is PLENTY big enough for a fullback. Besides it's not lke they're going to ask brandon to lead block up the middle (atleast i'd hope not). I think you could see Saine lead blocking to the edges though. Also as a fullback when you do get the ball it's more straight line and GO where as a tailback you hav to have patients and all that. This will get Brandon running down hill again, and will utilize his best assets. His Hands.

As for will we see it against NW? Who knows.... I mean why not? But something tells me we won't see much of it but then again we have had a bye week to practice with Saine at Fullback.
