RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

Still would like to see him used like he was in the title game last year. Came out at TE and WR and was very successful. I know he's played at WR some this year. He creates some serious mismatches at TE.

Wheel route, end around, double reverse, KO hand off, etc. Anything but running it up the gut - that doesn't work. Have you ever seen him break one like Beanie?

I have not seen him look like a true RB. I don't think he is one. That's not meant to be an insult at all.

None of the backs have broken one like Beanie...

Saine has excellent power for a speed guy... which is very surprising. He lacks vision and hasn't been able to find the holes but I think a lot of it is a confidence thing because he's been a different runner this year as compared to last.

The one run against Washington where he bounced it outside worked. That was because the middle was jammed. I saw him run as a senior in HS. They ran a RB sprint/play action thing where he ran parallel to the line and took a handoff at half speed passing the QB. That worked well.

This was tried in the Wisconsin game. The problem was that it was EXACTLY like we used him in the title game, and the DB knew exactly what was coming when he saw the formation/personnel: Interception.

Agreed, though I'd like to see it from more of an H-Back look. Same concept though

Ironically, the only game that I didn't get to see completely was the Wisconsin game. I saw the final quarter.

So, if (since) it's been tried, excuse my ignorance. :)

Except it was underthrown and not well executed. Try it with Flash, have Saine run em deep. Then reverse roles. The playcalling could be a little more creative and better executed. IMO

It wasn't the same formation as the title game nor was it even the same route.

Against LSU he lined up as either a wing or at fullback and ran a wheel route coming out of the backfield, whereas against Wisconsin he was split out wide at WR and just ran straight down the field. It was a poorly thrown ball and not to mention the fact that Saine had his arm hooked by the DB.

STUNNER:Brandon Saine was considered the odds-on favorite to take over when TB Chris "Beanie" Wells injured a foot in the season-opener. Instead, Saine saw limited action while Brandon Herron got most of the carries.
Now it turns out that Saine - considered the fastest man on the team as recently as last spring - may not play TB at all anymore.
Tressel said Tuesday that Saine is "evolving" into a fullback, and also will see some time at the slot position.
"We think that he can do some of the things that a fullback needs to do," he said.

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time, I figured Saine to be the heir to Beanie's throne. His speed would make him an atypical fullback. Unless he's permanently lost a step due to injury. They must plan on really bulking him up in the weight room.

Good luck, Brandon.
