RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

So that means we can't throw them out there for a gadget play here and there? That's all I'm lobbying for. All these other teams seem to get their "speed" guys in the open field and they make teams pay. I have yet to see us attempt that, aside from a few reverses.
Thomas has caught at least 3-4 passes in the open field, and done nothing with them. Small has caught a half dozen. Obviously the brians have too...

I really wouldn't consider the Brians our "speed" guys. They seem more like our possesion guys with some wheels. The one catch I remember Lamaar getting was the quick slant on Terrelle's first pass. Thats not getting the ball in the open field. Alot of the passes Ray gets are 10 yard ins and outs. DeVier has shown what he can do if you get him the ball in space. I don't think we've attempted that play since it worked.

The wheel route interception should of had a safety(according to Tressel) on Saine and not their best corner. Good scouting by Wiscy or just an accident? I say probably good scouting by Wiscy. Saine comes in and we run a small package of plays. Didn't fool anyone. Won't fool anyone again. Saine is gonna take some time to get better. Maybe even his ceiling is not very high?

Which is why they were thrown in at the end of the list... not at the beginning...

Lamaar has caught at least three passes underneath on screens, in space. He has not made the first guy miss, IIRC.

Ray has also received his share of horizontal passes and screens.

With Devier? No, but with plenty of others, including Ray and I think Lamaar too.

YSU tacklers also had something to do with it.

It almost seems to me like Brandon looks to make contact on kick returns rather than find the crease or the open area to run into. I noticed it a couple of games ago and he's continued to do it. It might be as simple as changing his theory for attack on returns for him, but there are also a ton of guys who could return for us.

Above all, I trust the coaches to put the right guys in there on kick returns. It's also not a bad deal to change who is back there from time to time to mess with the opposing team. If I had to make a suggestion to the staff, I wouldn't mind seeing "The Diamond" return formation again like we had when Ginn was back there with Gonzo & Holmes on the corners and Roy Hall spearheading the diamond for the short kicks. We used it because people were kicking it away from Ginn, but with the kicking tee moved back 5 yards, it might be worth bringing it back because the ball's not going into the endzone like it used to do. It also set up very nicely for trickeration like reverses and such.

Anyhow, back to Brandon... (sorry for getting off topic)

Track speed and Football speed are different.. I really don't see Hartline out there running past people.

Same can be said of the topic of this thread. With his track credentials and reported speed, you'd think Zoom could excel in the return game, but to be brutally honest, to me, he looks slow out there.

Yea, I understand what your saying. When I watch Zoom return kicks, it looks to me as he's going half speed waiting for a hole to turn it on. As where Boom and Mo just turn it on from the start and punish whoever steps in their path.

Ohio State football: Saine's time to shine?

APOhio State tried to go to Brandon Saine against Wisconsin, but Terrelle Pryor's deep ball to the sophomore was intercepted by Allen Langford.

Brandon Saine carried the ball 10 times in the first game of his college career, rushing for 42 yards and a touchdown against Youngstown State last season.
He hasn't carried the ball that often since. He had four more games of nine carries last season, but this year he has just 19 carries in five games and even during the three games Beanie Wells missed, Saine carried the ball just 11 times.
Maybe this is his week.
Wells on Tuesday night said his foot was still sore, though he's ready to play in pain this week and every week. If you want to read into his mood, Wells seemed a little down, though maybe he's just tired of foot talk. Wells has rushed 49 times this year for 385 yards.

Continued.................
