RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

I thought the long ball to Zoom was a good way to use a speed guy. But as a RB, he doesn't have the WR awareness. He tried to knock the ball out the defender hands. That's good. He ran along the sidelines and appeared to slow a step adjusting to the ball. Don't give up on this play but try it again, work on the timing, try different routes and use Zoom in the open field. Why not try that end around that UW ran several times last weekend? What every happened to the wheel route that was run successfully againt LSU and others?

I think Mo does a little better job of taking what's there, but I don't think he's a big upgrade over Brandon. A small bandaid on a bigger problem, much of which comes down to blocking imo (which hasn't been there consistently since Ted was a soph).

One of the rare times I am going to disagree with you JWINS.....I also believe the blocking can be suspect....but I don't think it's any worse than a lot of teams getting more production out of that position.

Honestly, return-men have to be warriors....the best get to full speed almost immediately and attack the oncoming tacklers. I think Boom has a decent burst and has shown hes unafraid of the oncoming defenders. Very similar to Mo Hall in that regard. Brandon really seems tenative and unwilling to go north-south....which is a little strange b/c that seemed to be his best attribute in High School.

I'm almost starting to think maybe Brandon would be better suited on defense where he can read and diagnose. I doubt it ever happens, but offensively he just seems very timid right now. It's really bizarre to me.

I am with you on the wheel route - we have run it with Zoom before and it worked. I also would like to see him on some quick hitting curl routes or somehow get him in space in the passing game because as a KR he is running way too tenative. He is going to get lost in the shuffle of the backfield unless we find someway to use him better.

Because thats not "Tressel Ball." We line up, let you know whats coming and still whoop most teams. Although IMO to hang with teams from say, the SEC, we need to start running plays like this. We got plenty of guys who are suited for this. For example.. Lamaar Thomas, Devon Torrence, RAY SMALL, Brandon Saine, Taurian Washington and DeVier Posey. I don't understand why we can't get these explosive guys touches in games. If we got any RB that can throw, I guarantee if we run a HB toss and send Terrelle out on a route it will end with 6 points. I guess thats why I don't coach at the college level. I think it might be time to dump the old school ball. I'm not knocking anyone, I'm just simply stating my opinion.

i think thats a wide open or dont throw it type of read, imo. he was marginally open and it was a mediocore at best throw.

At this point, we need to go with whats working, he is ok and all but he is just not progressing as you would expect. Right now, we need to go with what is working which is boom, and even mo hall, and wait til bowl time or spring ball to experiment with him.

Maurice Hall has used up all his eligibility. Mo Wells is still around. Beanie should probably get his reps, 15-20 carries, and leave the rest to Brandon Saine and Mo Wells. Saine was actually strong against YSU, Akron, and Washington last year, no sense to write him off as a lost cause yet. Give him a few drives and see how he looks/if get can bust one.

If not, then start worrying.

No, I didn't miss them. We've run those plays maybe 3-5 times? Wisconsin ran it 2-3 times on that single drive when they scored on it. My point was we got the talent to run the plays. So why don't we run them more. That was pretty much what I was saying.

Track and practice speed is much different from football speed. The whole playcalling bitching and moaning is driving me nuts. If these guys aren't getting reps, there's a reason. And I would not put the words "Brandon Saine" and "explosive" in the same sentence right now. I don't know if he's tentative from the injury or what, but I have been underwhelmed by his "football speed" this year. Small has the speed, but still hasn't put it all together aside from that one punt return. Thomas, Washington and Torrence are still very green and Posey's a true frosh.

So that means we can't throw them out there for a gadget play here and there? That's all I'm lobbying for. All these other teams seem to get their "speed" guys in the open field and they make teams pay. I have yet to see us attempt that, aside from a few reverses.
