RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

What happen to Brandon Saine? He's has so much upside more so then Boom and Mo. He's should be the 2nd behind Beanie.

From what little I see of him, he can move piles and and catch out of the back field. So is he's in Tressel's dog house.
You obviously havn't watch any TOSU games this year to say Saine should be ahead of boom on the depth charts. Yeah Saine is a good receiver out of the backfield and has good power, however he doesn't read the defense or hit the hole with a purpose like Boom does. Boom doesn't have track speed like Saine but IMO Boom looks faster on the field than Brandon. Brandon hasn't been 100 percent since the injury he suffered at Washington last season. Sure brandon when healthy and with added maturity might have a better upside but Boom is the clear number one option at running back with beanie out. I think saine is more dangerous out of the slot or on screens. I see Boom being a everydown back and at this pointe in time i don't know if i can say the same about Brandon. So from pure production on the field this year for you to say Brandon should be ahead of Boom on the depth chart is pure stupidity.:oh::io:

It's a "vision" thing. Herron has it. Saine doesn't. We can only hope that Saine gets better with time.
Completely agree. If saine had booms vision and boom had saines speed they would be unstoppable. But thats only in a perfect world. When saine gets more healthy and gets more confidence he can really be a beast IMO especially with his size a power.Hopefully by this time next year they can be a really good 1-2 punch.:oh::io:

Personally I think Saine's not 100% mentally because of the injuries...

And has anyone noticed that almost every time he comes onto the field when TP is in the game its a speed option? JT might be trying to establish a tendency for the scUM game..

Agreed, since the injury.

We need to drop the injury excuse. I understand mentally it could affect someone, but it's been over a year already since that. It was a minor knee incident nothing more, shoot I had the same injury and I was fine after some rest for a few weeks.

Last year he beat up YSU, recieved a TD against akron, then busted a big run against Washington. Three teams Brandon should have put numbers up on, and he did. His running style remains the same before/after the injury. To me like I've said numerous times his High School video's show me a lack of vision and fluid running motion. Sure in a straight line the kid is phenominal, but I think he run's a little too stiff and upright.

I think we need to give boom more props here and call it like it is. Boom simply has shown he's the more capable back. I think Brandon can impact the game, but I think it'll ahve to be from the slot not running back.

Like was stated vision is the biggest issue with Brandon, and then IMO his style of running is another (very straight up and tentative). If there's not a hole for beanie/herron they'll just put the pads down and churn away where as Brandon kind of hesitates. Again, here's hoping Brandon proves me wrong.

Saine off to slow start

By Doug Harris | Tuesday, September 30, 2008, 11:54 AM
Sophomore running back Brandon Saine has had a diminishing role in Ohio State?s rushing attack this season, and that?s not likely to change anytime soon.
The former Ohio Mr. Football from Piqua was limited in preseason practice because of a hamstring injury, and he hasn?t been able to make progress on the depth chart since his return.
Redshirt freshman Daniel ?Boom? Herron has clearly become the No. 2 tailback behind Beanie Wells and has shown more burst and shiftiness than Saine has displayed.
Saine rushed just three times for 11 yards against Minnesota on Saturday and returned three kickoffs for 59 yards.
?Brandon was on the sideline for 20-some practices, and it?s hard at that position if you don?t get your rhythm and get rolling and get opportunities and so forth,? OSU coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday.
?I thought Brandon did a good job bringing kicks back on Saturday. He got in a little bit on the offensive side. We continue to talk about how we can utilize him, but right now with all of a sudden Beanie getting back, and Boom, I think, doing very well, the tailback reps become even more rare.?

Brandon just seems.....lost out there. Not sure what's happening, but he doesn't play with the same speed he's capable of. His kickoff presence is bordering on a liability. I don't know if you can teach "vision" or of that's just an instinct you either have or don't, but Brandon just somehow seems unable to find the crease.

I agree. I don't know how you can go from where he was at last year (with all the praise in the world from Tressel) to being non existent. All the stories we heard about in Practice last year and this year. It appears he is in Tressels dog house. He is the 4th string running back now. I read where Tressel said in an interview that Brandon missed a ton of reps in practice due to his injury. It appears that missing practice has put him behind the 8 ball. New talent comes in each year, and if your not ready to go, your sitting down. Look at the QB situation. We also have a freshman center (not sure if the starter was injured or not). I am sure he has not been put into this situation before, as he has always excelled and was the preverbial "the man". He is defnately looking into the abyss right now. He can either pout, or doing something about it. We have all been there in one way or the other. I was hoping to see more runs like he had last year at the Washington game. He juked and Zoom he was gone. That is the Brandon I was use to watching on High School. He is such a good kid and I want nothing but the best for him.

I firmly believe a back needs to get reps to get into the game. It always appears to me that when Brandon is in the game he gets hit right after he gets the ball, or the there is just nothing there. Take for granted when nothing is there , he seems to lower his head and gets 2 or 3 yrds. Give him the ball 10 times and he gets 50 yrds. Beanie is the man, and should get 90% of the carries. Running a stable of RB's has historically not worked, just like platooning QB's. If he is that Talented as Tressel says he is, then you find a way to get the man some reps in practice. Throwing anyone out there without reps is like throwing hamburger to hungry piranna's....Im just frustrated and was hoping he would do well this year....

I think it's time to let Mo Wells return kicks next to Herron. You either have it or you don't.
I think Mo does a little better job of taking what's there, but I don't think he's a big upgrade over Brandon. A small bandaid on a bigger problem, much of which comes down to blocking imo (which hasn't been there consistently since Ted was a soph).

Mo just gets up to speed quicker, something that we NEVER see when BS returns a kick. Some people just aren't cut out for kick returning. He appears to be one of them.

I'm all for trying anyone that thinks they can return, be it Thomas, Small or anyone else. Herron does good, but you want burners as your returners and neither are burners.
