RB Brandon "Zoom" Saine (official thread)

I think Saine is just fine physically. He's had plenty of time to get over the knee, hamstring, and whatever else that may have bothered him. To me I think it's extremely mental with also his skill set having a bit to do with it as well.

He has GREAT straight line speed thats a given, but how many times have we seen brandon find a hole make a move and hit it upfield? Hardly ever. I think Brandon again just simply lacks some of the skill sets required to be a great back. Fluid hips, agility, and most of all vision.

I'd like to see brandon as a full back in a three point stance very close to the line of scrimage. This way we can snap the ball and just hand it off to brandon who just has to go FORWARD. If he's fast enough (which he probably is) he can get 3-4 yards before the lineman have time to even hit their gaps. Nothing against Brandon but what really seperates him from the likes of Erik Haw? Remember how much we loved Erik to start because he was simply a burner? Just because you have speed doesn't mean you'll be great. Fortunately Brandon has two more years where maybe we can find a role for him in our offense.

Brandon is tough, i went to high school with him, he played through an ankle injury through that senior season where he was pounded by every team we played because they new our gamplan, give Brandon the ball. But he still had a remarkable season leading our team to the state championship. I agree with the person that says he doesn't seem 100% mental because even between his freshman and sophomore years it just seems like he ran better last year. So blame it on the injuries or not i just am hoping that another off season of injury free pratice will have him in a posative role in the offense where as a junior he can start to have an impact because in high school it wasn't till his junior year that he started to have his impact.

I think Brandon can take one of two routes:

1) Go through the motions. "Boom is the man, this Berry kid is coming in, I am just going to do enough to keep my scholarship and ride this thing out."

2) I am better than this. "I had a shitty year, but the starting RB position is mine now that Beanie is gone. I am going to bust my ass getting ready for next year, no way in hell am I going to let Boom or some freshman come in here and take it from me."

My hope is that he chooses option 2. I personally think he has the skill set to be a successful RB at tOSU. Like Beanie or Eddie...no, but maybe like Jonathan Wells or Wiley. Show us something ZOOM!

Brandon Saine got hurt before last season, then rarely played.

In Piqua, Wendi Croft is better known as "Brandon Saine's mom."

Wherever she goes, she is asked about her now-you-see-him, now-you-don't son, a hometown hero and Ohio State running back.

She is asked about Brandon so often, she sometimes answers before the words get out of the questioner's mouth:

"He's fine and, no, he's not transferring to Michigan," Croft says.

Wearily, she adds, "I just got that again at the bank a few minutes ago."

It's a mark of how high Saine was two years ago, when he won Ohio's Mr. Football title, led Piqua to a state title, won several sprint events at the state track meet and was a Parade All-American.

It's also a mark of how low Saine fell last fall, when he followed up a tantalizing 2007 season by getting hurt and barely playing.

This spring represents a new beginning for him. Workhorse Chris "Beanie" Wells left for the NFL, leaving Saine competing with last year's top backup, Dan Herron.

So far, Saine has practiced mostly with the second team, but he's getting a lot of repetitions and looks as if he's fully healed from the hamstring pull that cost him last season.

"It's a lot of fun just being able to get out there and play football," he said. "I'm starting over with a clean slate."

It wouldn't make sense to run him up the middle. All of his major plays from 2007 and high school (ignore last year, he was hurt) were getting the ball on the outside and getting downfield in a hurry. However, Pryor and Saine running the option is a scary proposition - either guy can burn the defense.
