Ohio State football: Assessing the real Brandon Saine

D.L.The way he looked this spring, Brandon Saine should be signing autographs.
Ohio State running backs

Thought No. 3
I'm out of good things to say about Brandon Saine.
What's left after his fantastic showing this spring? The guy is a nearly 220-pound sprint champion. And three months ago, I wasn't even factoring him into Ohio State's running game for next fall.
How could you? In two seasons at Ohio State, Brandon Saine has carried the ball 86 times for 332 yards.
Why would anyone be excited about that?

He flashed as a freshman, but more as a unique alternative to Beanie Wells, a pass catcher who could also line up at fullback. He did enough that the Buckeyes started planning for him in the offense as a sophomore, knowing he'd never get enough regular carries with Wells there. So they were going to try him at fullback some, line him up in the backfield with Wells in different ways, and then his sophomore season was wrecked by injuries.
When Wells went down and there was a chance to play last season, Saine showed little and was a clearly inferior option to Dan Herron. In the three games Wells missed, Herron ran for 195 yards on 43 carries, while Saine ran for 34 yards on 11 carries.

Brandon's Back: Running back Brandon Saine was going to have a big role in the offense last season, but that role never materialized due to a rash of injuries that literally ruined his season. According to Jake Ballard, Saine is back a full health this year and poised to be a major contributor to the OSU offense.

"He's definitely to where he used to be before," said Ballard.

"Last season he had a lot of injuries. I think he's definitely coming back to where he used to be and I think he's going to be a big threat for us offensively.

"He brings mismatches. Whether he's coming out of the backfield and going on a pass route or breaks one down the field. If he's in the receiving game a linebacker is not going to be able to cover him.

"There's no way. He's too fast."

The top 20 Buckeyes for 2009

OSU
Brandon Saine

No. 18: Junior running back Brandon Saine

Another guy who would be higher on this list based only on potential.

In two seasons, he has 86 carries for 332 yards and 15 catches for 197 yards.

But here's something I always come back to with Saine. When the Buckeyes were back in the national title game after the 2007 season, looking to rebuild their reputation after the loss to Florida the year before, with months to prepare against all that SEC speed people love to talk about, the first play Ohio State ran in that game against LSU was a pass to Saine. It went incomplete.

After Beanie Wells broke off a touchdown run, and the defense held LSU, when the Buckeyes got the ball back, the first play they ran in the next series was a - pass to Saine, and it went for 44 years.

That Saine was dangerous. That Saine was versatile. That Saine was speed and size. And I don't know if we've ever seen that Saine in another game in two seasons.

His freshman season was interrupted by arthroscopic knee injury. Last season was sidetracked by a hamstring injury that he thought was nothing during the preseason, but it wound up keeping him out of so much practice time, he was behind for the rest of the year.

There's a reason why Saine wasn't redshirted--and Herron was--in 2007. If Saine is back to where he was in his first few games as a true frosh, then we'll be in great shape in the backfield.

Ohio State vs. Michigan - Herron Saine looking to be next great Buckeye back

"It's been kind of difficult, considering the injuries I've had to deal with since I got here, but I am healthy now and really focusing on going forward and getting ready for the season," said Saine, a junior.

"When you're healthy and you feel good and you don't have to worry about being nicked up or making an injury worse, the game is a lot more fun."

This article was in the Sunday Blade. I look for Boom and Zoom to explode this year.

this guy needs to start full back for us! i dont care what you think about that. just imagine to formations we can run with him and boom in the back field.

Seriously? You don't waste that kind of talent at fullback. Maybe you make a package or something, but if he's as good as advertised he should take touches from Herron.

COLUMBUS ?
Boom and Zoom, that?s how Head Coach Jim Tressel started referring to them. Ohio State?s offense last year had more Boom and far less Zoom, but Brandon Saine is hoping to find his way in the Buckeye backfield more this season.

The 6-foot-1, 217-pound junior from Piqua came to Ohio State with the same kind of hype as most incoming freshmen running backs do in Columbus. His nickname is ?Zoom.? Dan Herron is called ?Boom.? One runs fast; the other runs hard.

One has been healthy; the other wasn?t last season.

Saine missed most of preseason camp with a bad hamstring. That set back his development and how much Tressel used him during the season.

He was Ohio?s Mr. Football coming to OSU in 2007. He rushed for 1,895 yards as a senior at Piqua with 27 touchdowns, and he gained 412 yards through the air. He was a Parade All-American and has been timed at 4.35 in the 40.

?I?m really excited,? Saine said after a scorching practice Wednesday.

?My family really encourages me and they?re excited that I?m healthy. Last year, I made it to the second day of camp and then I was riding the bicycle everyday. It?s been fun to work in this camp.?

Training camp has been grueling compared to a year ago. Most positions were set last August. This year, many are up for grabs, as well as roles.

I was totally caught off gaurd by the beard/mohawk combo.

Zoom ran like a starter today. Bulldozing motherfuckers. I'm really looking forward to watching him for awhile longer.

Agreed about Saine. The leg drive was impressive, now if he get ever just get that seam opened up and just go. Maybe we'll have to wait till Michigan which just seems to give us roads to run on.

I felt terrible when he went limping off the field early in the game. I was really glad when he came out and ran the ball with purpose and taking it right at people and not trying to run around them. I thought some of the best sets that were run today had both Saine, TP and Boom in the backfield on a shotgun formation.

It is one thing to talk the talk and a totally different one to walk the walk. Saine talked alot about coming back strong especially to get people from asking his mom about him. I believe him now. Way to go Brandon...KEEP IT UP!!!!!

Yes, I thought he was far more effective than Boom today which surprised me. I think he earned the start against USC. ...not that my opinion means much.
