Rate a Position...Part 1..QB

Going into next year, why would what he did as a sophmore or freshman have much bearing at all, especially compared to his junior year?

I'm not saying the kid is this or that, but to say he "sucks" or is "mediocre" after the numbers he put up last year is, in a nutshell, inaccurate. How is 25th in the nation in efficiency "mediocre" ? How is 3500+ passing yards "mediocre" ? 31+ TD's? etc. etc.?

If you think 19 INT's and 59% completion % make up the difference AND some on that, well I respectfully disagree.

Timmy Chang also threw for a shit load of yards but he also threw tons of interceptions. You act like 3,500 yards makes him a great qb and just ignore his int's. 59% completion percentage is decent but nothing to brag about.

Here's 1,100 yards of his 2005 offense in 3 games, all losses:

431-yards at Memphis. 1TD, 3INTs
337-yards against UAB. 2TDs, 3INTs
360-yards at SMU. 3TDs, 4INTs

Forgive me if I'm not impressed that he racked up 2/3rds of that total by hanging 300 to 400 yards passing on Houston, Memphis, Rice, Tulsa, UAB, and SMU.

Jordan Palmer is nothing more than a live arm in a QB-friendly system, with a famous last name. Nothing in any of his single game performances indicates that he's some exceptionally talented QB. Anyone at a D1A school should hit 3,500 yards when they're getting 45 attempts per game.

I dont think we are arguing the same issue. I never said he was great, but "sucks" is easily a stretch, and I think "mediocre" is also [just not as much].

#16 Total Offense
#25 Passing Efficiency
#7 Total Passing Yards
#10 Points Responsible For

In all of the NCAA. Come on.

He sucks for the praise that he gets. I've seen him listed ahead of Troy Smith(Phil Steele) and I've seen him included in top 10 qb lists(Tod McShay). He's mediocre at best.

Your original post just said he sucks, but I can see your point if you mean in comparison to where some are placing him. Again, those stats above it's hard to make the "mediocre" statement fly.

I'm not the one ignoring the stats. I've acknowledged the INT's and completion %, YOU on the other hand have yet to really acknowlege the positives he's done as well. Again, if you think the INT's and % outweight those stats above than as I said before I respectfully disagree.

You named 2 negatives [the completion % isn't BAD] agaisnt how many positives? That is MY point.

Best: Troy Smith - You know the score here.

Overrated: Pat White - He's a great runner, but can he throw? Not from what I've seen so far.

Underrated: Colt Brennan - Yeah, he plays for hawaii so of course he puts up big yards. But let's look at this more closely. As a sophmore, he threw for 4300 yards, with 68% completion and 8.35ypa. You know he's going to throw, but he still gets the job done. For comparison: Chang as a senior threw for 4250 yards, with 59% completion and 7.07ypa. He's in a good system, but he's a darn good player too, don't discount him.

Best: Troy Smith - If I had to win one game, there is nobody I would rather have under center. Makes the plays when they have to be made.

Overrated: Chad Henne - Can't beat Ohio State. Can't beat Notre Dame. Can't win a bowl game. Was the leader of the scUM team that went 7-5.

Underrated: Shawn Bell - Was a game away from leading Baylor, the bottom of the college football food chain, to a bowl game last year. Almost upset OU in 2OT in Norman. Lead BU to OT upset over A&M in '04. Helped Baylor take A&M to OT in '05 in College Station. Absolutely no one in America knows about this kid, yet he is one of the guys helping Baylor turn their program around.

I was waiting for someone to list Pat White being overrated, and I got 2. Haven't seen him play, but I've gotten the feeling that he's getting more pub than he deserves. Can't remember where I saw it, but someone listed White as a better QB than Troy Smith on a national listing...

I forgot about Jordan Palmer. He really sucks but it's amazing what being tall and having a famous last name can do for you.

I wouldnt go as far as saying Jordan Palmer really sucks, if you would have watched any uTep games you would see he has a rocket arm and good accuracy. The only reason he "sucks" is because he plays for uTep. If he played for a team where he wasnt running around all game he may have better decision making.

I'll cut him some slack if his o-line is as bad as you say it is.

The next postion that we will be rating is the RB.

Best RB: Peterson - hands down the best RB in thr country this coming season.

Overrated RB: Leonard (Rutgers) - good player, but not as good as people think he is.

Underrated RB: Pittman - had a huge season this past year. People do not realize how great he really is. Quietest 1300+ yds ive ever seen.

Just a thought, but maybe we could do a new thread for each position so that one thread doesn't get too jumbled up with every discussion of every position. :)

Inexperience isn't a viable excuse for going 0-6 in your three biggest games.

Wow! That would suck. I mean, what are the odds you can loose twice in each game?

On the other hand, Chad Henne has beaten Iowa and Penn State in years when we could not and I don't recall our beating Vince Young. He's put his team in position to win all of the six losses mentioned. Even with a 13 point lead and something like 6 minutes to go, OSU fans were holding their breath, afraid that Henne would hit Edwards or Breaston, get the on side kick and do it again.

I wouldn't take anyone ahead of Troy Smith right now and I always assume that anyone from Notre Dame is over rated.
