QB/WR Terrelle Pryor ('10 Rose, '11 Sugar MVP)

ESPN.com

The NFL declared former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor eligible for the supplemental draft Thursday but ruled that he will not be able to play in the first five games of the 2011 season after he signs a contract.

The league announced Pryor was eligible in a memo sent to its 32 teams Thursday. The 2011 supplemental draft will take place Monday, Aug. 22.

The NFL said that Pryor can play in preseason games after he is drafted, although he can't play until Week 6 of the season.

"... Pryor made decisions that undermine the integrity of the eligibility rules for the NFL Draft. Those actions included failing to cooperate with the NCAA and hiring an agent in violation of NCAA rules, which resulted in Ohio State declaring him ineligible to continue playing college football.

"Pryor then applied to enter the NFL after the regular draft. Pryor had accepted at the end of the 2010 college football season a suspension for the first five games of the 2011 season for violating NCAA rules. Pryor will be ineligible to practice prior to or play in the first five games of the NFL regular season after he signs."

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter contributed to this report.

So now the NFL is punishing it's players for trangressions committed while in college? That has to be good news for the Golden Emu. He will at least get some starts when sCam and Auburn gets taken down. And how many teams will be without the services of daU?

THey are punishing him for trying to undermine the supplemental draft. That's my understanding.

Miami's penalties aren't likely to come out before the end of the season anyways, so any suspensions handed down by the school will be for this season. Players facing NCAA punishment will likely be for next year, and they can just declare for the regular draft.

I think the NFL's decision is actually a pretty tough stance. Not being able to play in games, pfft, he wouldn't be anyways. Not being able to practice with the team the first 5 weeks of the regular season during your rookie year? That's going to put him on a learning curve well behind the other rookies, and he may not be able to make up those 5 weeks for a full year.

This precedent translates to different positions with different results. If the same thing had happened to Adrian Peterson who would argue it wasn't a severe punishment? How about a top defensive lineman or wide receiver. I don't think this is going to open any floodgates. Serving your college suspension while in the NFL is likely to keep most kids from following TP's path into the supplemental draft.

So is Goodell knocking on Reggie Bush's door this morning? Doubtful.

Reggie Bush entered the regular draft. The sanctions against TP are because he basically skirted the regular draft. It all comes down to the timing of the revelations, really, but I don't see this as an outlandish stance by the NFL. It sure beats not letting him into the supplemental.

TP is eligible and will miss the first 5 games and can not practice. I mentioned in earlier post that the NFL can work with the NCAA on this issue. I applaud Roger on this unprecedented move and step. Make these kids have some skin in the game while at school. The character thing is growing in both the NCAA and NFL. I think if kids realize they can hurt their eligibility for the draft and lose millions perhaps not taking that 50k handshake is not as good of an idea. The NCAA needs to adjust the bill and make it a full ride and then how about setting up a program where during the off months to make money they work with kids and in the community that is set at a fixed wage. This will work around their schedule and build character and can take the girls out on dates. Last can we please set up a way where the kids do not get their awards until their eligiblity is over?? One they will appreciate more when their older and two they know they earned it and will get it.

On the flipside I have to ask: What NFL rule did TP violate? Ben R. didn't get a 5 game suspension.

I get carry over of penalty if the transgressions also violate league rules..but in this case....does TP really deserve a 5 game sit down? On what basis? Does that make sense given what he did and comparing it to other NFL suspension precedents?

Drugs? Yep...carry it over. Fighting/cheating? Absolutely. But he didn't actually break the law or an NFL rule.

This is collusion..and that *is* against the law.

EDIT: steroids only gets you a 4 game suspension for the first offense. I'm all for making sure Pryor 'gets his' and understand there are some nuances as we are talking about the supplemental draft, but keeping it 5 AND holding him out of practices seems...arbitrary and incredibly harsh given what he actually did and how it relates to the NFL rules.

LOL the NFL is a joke. Since when did it get a conscience?
The more I think about it, the more of a joke it really is. Either he is eligible or not. If they are not continuing the NCAA punishment, (which would be even dumber) what is the actual reason for the suspension? It would make much more sense for him not to be eligible than to say he is eligible, but in trouble for underminding the league to get into the supp. draft and give him a suspension.

Between this and what Vick said today, Goodell is starting to look like a real ass hat.

It almost defeats the purpose of the supplemental draft requiring some change in eligibility status to be included -- "Player X, you are ineligible to play college ball next year so you can be in our supplemental draft, but since you were ineligible in college you won't be able to play in the NFL this year." Alrighty then.
