QB/WR Braxton Miller (B1G POY, National Champion, OSU HOF)

Gutsy performance on this day? Yes. Dynamic college player over the course of the 2013 season? Yes. Heisman trophy-level player in 2014. Yes. NFL-caliber QB? Not a chance.

That's not meant to be a knock against a guy who I consider to be a top-tier college player. I simply feel it would be a huge mistake to leave for the NFL since his mechanics are not up to par and he's not yet demonstrated an ability to consistently make the throws you need to make at the next level.

I love the dude to death and he's tougher than all hell. Tougher than I'll ever be. At the end of the day he's a six-star athlete, but a three-star QB. It's easy to go out there in the Big Ten and get away with the bad reads and the poor throws a lot of the time but he's just not good at the little things that make you a successful QB.

He can be a total star on the next level if he's willing to change positions, but if he goes full Tebow at the next level, he's dead in the water.

Somebody made the point earlier that we're asking the wrong question in reference to his NFL future and ignoring the question about whether he can be a championship college QB. I think if the will is there to do it, he can become better than a 3-star passer next year if we are speaking strictly about his collegiate potential. To me I think the late-season complaints about Herman have missed the point - focusing mostly on his playcalling and not questioning his QB coaching.

I compare him to Vick. Vick was always a guy who held the ball carelessly, who was unable to read pre-snap coverages and was unable to make consistently accurate reads after the snap. He got away with it a lot when he was young because he was fast and he was able to do exceptional things to counter his panic in the face of pressure. Eventually he wasn't able to make up for it anymore and he quickly fell out of place because he was just a guy taking hard shots, fumbling and throwing ducks to guys who cut off routes underneath.

Braxton is the exact same way. I'm sure he would be a better player by coming back. The question is whether he wants to be an NFL QB or not. If he does, he better leave now because another year of this or a slightly better version of this is going to prove that he can't do the things necessary for regular NFL success. If he's willing to pull a Cobb and play WR, then I think he can be good enough to win an NCAA title at QB next year and still make bank after his senior year.

There's only so much Herman can do coaching wise. You can teach a guy all of these things but if he simply cannot recognize these things in a game what can you do? Surely they work on zone read stuff CONSTANTLY and he's been doing it for three years yet he STILL makes awful reads on a routine basis. Sometimes it's just not there. That doesn't make him awful or mean anyone should be ripping the kid, but at this point he's going to be a two steps forward, one step back player and we can either accept it or continue waiting for things to happen that probably aren't going to happen.

Go back to school and don't even think about the NFL, cfl, or arena football. Not close to being a qb.

2011 - 54%, 1159yds, 13 TD, 4 INT, 138.4 QB Rating
2012 - 58%, 2039yds, 15 TD, 6 INT, 140.5 QB Rating
2013 - 63%, 1860yds, 24 TD, 7 INT, 157.9 QB Rating

2011 - explanation needed?
2012 - first year in new offense, but made obvious improvements
2013 - Rolling before the injury & on FIRE (minus NW) before the 2nd Bye Week. Struggled down the stretch. Despite favoring his right arm early in the game & take several huge hits throughout tonight, he still finished 16/24 (66.7%) for 234 2 TDs & 2 INTs.

Yes, there are obvious things to work on & I think Braxton should return......but not close to a QB? Please stop.

And I stand with @Deety.

Ohio State QB Braxton Miller hurt throwing shoulder on Orange Bowl's fifth play, said pain was a 9.5

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Ohio State junior quarterback Braxton Miller hurt his right throwing shoulder on the fifth play of Friday night's 40-35 loss to Clemson in the Orange Bowl when he was sacked by Clemson defensive end Vic Beasley. Miller said he played the rest of the game with pain that was a “nine-and-a-half” on a scale of one to 10. But the Buckeyes kept him in the game, save for a two-point conversion play for Kenny Guiton in the fourth quarter after Miller was hurt again while being driven to the ground after delivering a touchdown pass to Carlos Hyde.

“The conversation was if he can walk, if he's good enough to go out there, he's going to go out there,” OSU offensive coordinator Tom Herman said. “He's our guy. We stick by him. The only conversation was, 'Can he stand up and can he throw the ball?' and that was about it. Once we got yesses to both of those questions, we were good to go.”

Miler took several other shots in the game. Urban Meyer checked with Miller about his shoulder after a 57-yard TD pass to Jeff Heuerman in the second quarter to make sure he felt comfortable throwing. Miller said the bigger issue was running and potentially taking more hits.

“I think it just affected my running,” Miller said. “Throwing wise it was cool.”

But it was never right.

“I don't know what happened,” Miller said of the first hit. “I landed on my elbow, but it shot right up to my shoulder. It was hurting real bad.”

Backup QB Kenny Guiton said he is always ready to go in but he said when he talked to Miller on the field, the starter seemed like he would stay in.

“After that point I knew he was OK,” Guiton said.

Miller finished the game by underthrowing a pass over the middle that was intercepted in the final minutes. He said that was more of a case of not seeing a defender drop into coverage when he didn't expect him to be there.

“I'll give him props. I'll give him good coverage,” Miller said. “He made a good play. I thought I had (Philly) Brown wide open.”

In the moment, Miller's reaction was, “everyone is going to hate me. So I just keep a smile on my face and keep it going and just get better from it.”

These were moments the quarterback and the coaches decided he wasn't going to miss.

“I asked him, and he said, 'I'm fine,'” Urban Meyer said. “He's a soldier. He's a warrior.”

Cute pic, but that's a sad argument. Those stats are pretty mediocre for someone who's supposed to be a heisman candidate, let alone someone looking to get drafted in professional football. My statement was that he's not close to the level of playing qb in a professional setting. And he isn't! Stevie wonder can see that! Are you that much of a scarlet glassed homer? Braxton is still just an athlete playing qb, and its obvious to every analyst on every sports network. His passing stats were average this year, duh! You can stand with whoever you want but its common sense that Braxton is nit a qb yet ready for yhe next level, and he's still far ftom it. He played tough while injured last night, but his stat line still screams athlete and not qb, it looked like a stat line from Vince young, or Oregon's qb, who hardly ever amount to much In the nfl

I'm not bashing his stats by any means, but they're certainly not an indicator of success at the NFL level. If they were, Timmy Chang would be on his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame right now. While I do agree that the previous comment calling his inability to play QB at any level was not accurate, I do think it is fair to at least be skeptical of his ability to play the position in the NFL and thus question his decision to leave early. NFL people do not care how many yards you threw for in college. They are concerned with your ability to make NFL throws and in my basic understanding of what actually constitutes an "NFL throw," I do not think he has shown an ability to do that to this point. I'm certainly not able to speak to his prowess in breaking down a defensive scheme, but it's pretty clear he has not been able to consistently display, at the very least, the arm strength and accuracy required for the next level.

College stats don't really add up to a hill of beans when it comes to whether or not a QB will succeed in the NFL. I love Braxton's game, I think he's a phenomenal talent, and I think he showed a hell of a lot of toughness last night. That said, I don't see him being any better than a 5th round pick should he come out this year and, to be honest, I wouldn't be shocked if he weren't selected at all. As well as he played last night, he showed that he still has significant room for improvement in throwing the ball.
