QB/WR Braxton Miller (B1G POY, National Champion, OSU HOF)

That's your takeaway from last night's game?

I love Braxton, but he was a liability passing the ball the last few weeks:

38 comp / 82 att / 46.3 comp. pct.
Those are sub-Reggie Ball passing stats, and more than half of those attempts came against Illinois and Indiana.

I'm going to be unequivocal about this - he is not a pro QB right now and it would be a mistake for him to enter the draft. He faced a secondary with two NFL CBs last night and other than one great throw to Philly Brown for a TD he didn't do squat as a passer.

Furthermore, when he gets in trouble he has very strong Rex Grossman tendencies. It has paid off big in many instances, but the "eff it, I'm going deep" approach is not sustainable and the percentages have caught up with him.

I agree that he needs to come back and definitely needs further development, but right now the scheme and the WRs do no favors to him. It seems like 70% of the routes OSU runs are 20+ yards downfield and if they do pass short it's out in the flats to Hyde or Brown if he's uncovered. After the Iowa/PSU games the passing game has devolved into mostly vertical throws. I don't understand how you can run for 275 yards on a good defense and not have any type of advantage in the passing game.

Most of the catchable deep throws Miller makes are dropped by the WRs. Miller needs to play better, but the WRs need to make big catches in big games.

Some of the verts are Millers choices versus other options.

I cannot currently imagine Miller as an NFL QB. If he leaves now, rots a ruck. Maybe after another year...but not as of today.

Miller is still an athlete, and not a QB, yet. He certainly needs another year in college. And the last few weeks have shown that. It's great to boast about him running for over 100yds in games, but let's be serious, that's not going to happen in the NFL. He still hasn't gone threw all progressions and is relying on his legs a lot. And he could excel, IMO, on shorter intermediate routes like in a west coast scheme. The straight up vertical passing game is too predictable. Guys like Philly, devin, dontre would excel on slants and short ins, in space to create mismatches. Hopefully that can be used a little more in the orange bowl and next season. Braxton started off well passing, in the spring game and early in the season, but became too much of a runner as the season progressed

Given the fact that everyone said we had the best to RBs in the B1G this year and it was Braxton & Hyde speaks volumes... Everything towards the end of the season that I saw in the passing game was WR screen/ish, or a deep bomb... the passing game seems vanilla and i'm not sure if thats TH/UM or because of Braxton.

I'm sure that's true and sometimes he does get greedy, but just watching the passing offense now as opposed to Iowa & PSU, it just looks completely different and to me it's so different that I have a hard time thinking it's just Miller. He was completing 80% of his passes in a 3 game stretch and then completed 46% of his passes in a 4 game stretch. Did he just become bad overnight? I honestly don't know, it's really strange to me. After the 2nd bye week something definitely happened that made them decide to change things up. Just watching the games and the throws he was able to make...and then those throws/routes just seemed to disappear.

And I agree about the NFL. I keep hearing people say he's gone and to me it makes no sense. Great arm and he's definitely improved, but no way do I think he'll get draft earlier than maybe the 4th or 5th round. Not sure why he'd leave early just for that.

As of right now, I don't think Braxton comes back. I realize the QB class is deep, but......
  • Millions flashing in front of your eyes with a family to take care of (Braxton has a baby boy, not sure if everyone knows that)
  • Losing 4/5 starting OL
  • Having already suffered a knee injury this year
Yes he still has room for growth, but why not get paid while working on it? I realize we all WANT him back, but I just don't see it right now. Could that change between now & the draft? Of course....but enjoy these moments while they last.

I've changed my mind. I think he comes back & needs to come back.

This. While we have very decent wideouts, they aren't constant receiving threats outside of Corey Brown (and he is very good but not elite). Devin Smith is a burner but can disappear in tight coverage and Evan Spencer is not reliable. While Braxton needs to work on some things (intermediate passing/touch, long ball touch, and overall accuracy), his decreased passing output in the past couple of weeks hasn't been all on him, IMO. CBs are pressing our receivers at the line and the WR's aren't getting enough separation to give Braxton good windows consistently, and its not like he has Aaaron Rodger's accuracy. Its basically the same problem we've had with the WR for the past 2 season abet the WRs improved from an extremely suspect group last year. Add this to uncharacteristic drops and Herman not really diversifying his passing playbook (whether he is doing this out of necessity or preference is up for debate), and you have a recipe for Braxton's struggles. I think another year redefining his skills with 2-4 consistent playmakers emerging in the passing game will allow Braxton to reach his full potential performance wise. Im confident Braxton and Herman will put in the work necessary, but I'm worried about the development of playmakers in the WR core. Hopefully all these highly skilled and fast athletes we have been recruiting lately (samuel, Wilson, Marshall, Brown, McClaurin, etc.) pan out.

Braxton has got to learn that TE's are his friend. Both in the passing game and blocking.

The lack of touches to our TE's has been criminal the past two seasons, and has plagued this offense a bit in the passing game.

I don't know what could cause a team to not consider their TE's as potential scoring threats, perhaps it's the scheme in which Ohio State now runs. Either way, MOAR catches for TE's!

Braxtons regression has been more of a problem than our wrs. We haven't had elite wr talent in years but still they could produce. The end of the year looked like TPs soph year when he chose to run constantly because he had little confidence in his arm. I take nothing away from Mich st's defense, but osu has been a very flawed, one dimensional team for a while now, that was winning on the legs of 2 players. with the success of the run I've seen little play action used, and a lot of passes were over thrown. Excuses have been made for weeks that braxton hasn't used his arm much due to inclimate weather, yet opposing qbs have torched our defense weekly.
Like tootall said, our TEs should be used much more. We have a HC and OC who have made previous TEs stars yet heurman and vannett can't get consistent looks yet both have serious talent.

Is it really his regression, or is it just the play calling?
I honestly don't know, but it seems to me he threw a few passes in the seam against scUM and MSU... and they were good throws that were caught. On the tv, I can't tell if it's the playcalling that the routes are always deep -- or if he's just not progressing in the reads and always pulls the trigger for the deep ball.
The screens are not cutting it, however.
