QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

Sure it will...just ask Bobby Delmutti about the ramifications or the guy who owns the car lot where MoC got the Monte Carlo.

Goof can get more specific, but I have read about the hell Delmutti has endured
Dellimuti has gone through some serious shit..life threatening shit. Here's a guy that came to the aid of Clarett out of what he thought was "goodwill" as he is a guy that's known across the Harding area as someone that helps unfortunate people. There are many, including, Thom McDaniels (Clarett's HS coach) that felt it was a travesty that the NCAA found Dellimuti's actions wrong...now, he's had to suffer big time for it..I'm not condoning the action, I'm just saying his life is hell now since his name was released.

I don't think releasing someone's name is going to deter a thing. I mean, the person who gave Troy the "extra benefits" has already lost all his privilages as a booster. Isn't that enough? You release his or her name and you can bet that person will suffer more than the crime itself.

I think some of you don't realize how important these boosters are to universities. If OSU adopted a policy of revealing the names of people that did something wrong, I could bet that money that gets poured into OSU would stop, more than giving benefits to players.

What if a booster gave Troy $100 to buy his mom a birthday present or something? Is that worth ruining that person's life? I don't think you can create a system of releasing names based on the crime. Believe me, media or someone else will eventually find out who this is and the name will get released anyways.

Anyways, I'm not defending the boosters but I just don't agree with the policy of releasing names for every offense.

You know, maybe Smith just had an incurable fear of tiny latinos with gargantuan "guitars" (these guys greeted the bucks as they got to SA, says Davidson)

I can only assume that the insinuation here is that the boosters giving money to the players are either A) close friends with big money boosters to the university or B) the big money boosters to the university. And the reason not to release the names is not to piss these people off.

Sometimes I do forget how much more important these people are than the rest of us. I guess I should just accept their improprieties as a part of the business and stop looking for possible solutions. I would like to thank the boosters for their contributions, both for helping the university and for hurting the university. Because apparently we cannot have one without the other. At least that's the impression I'm getting now.

And if this is the case, then it is a culture that Andy Geiger has created. He has given these boosters perks for their donations, such as the luxury boxes in the Stadium, the Huntington Club in that travesty known as the Schott, and the confidentiality they recieve when they put the university's reputation on the line.

I should have known my freshman year in 1998. Mr. Geiger allowed the freshman class only one ticket to home games so more tickets would be available in a year where we were the national title favorites. Now, I know who the most important Buckeyes are. It's not the players. It's not even former players. It's not the coaches. It's not the administration. And it's definately not the students. It's the big money boosters. It has been since Geiger got there. God forbid the boosters or Geiger would do anything they do for the "goodwill" of the university as a whole, and not for themselves. But there I go again... thinking that the rest of us are important to Ohio State.

I've got a feeling that the booster's identity will get revealed soon enough, from someone outside the department. Let's hope so.

Here is the thing I am struggling with.

Last I Heard - the Smith "transaction" -- whatever its type -- took place in March, or possibly April.
So, that’s how the situation looked heading into the Michigan game. Was there any way Smith could lead OSU to a victory over Michigan?
As if reading from the soap opera script directly, Smith didn’t just lead the Bucks to victory, he turned in probably the best performance by an OSU quarterback in the history of the rivalry.
A little less than a month later, he gets suspended for what looks to be “extra benefits.” Athletic director Andy Geiger told the Columbus Dispatch that the infraction took place last March or April, so it wasn’t like Smith took some type of handout after his big game against Michigan. It was something minor that happened during the spring.
The Smith revelation took place Friday 17th December (near as we can discern).

On hearing this gut-buster tOSU quickly (well as quickly as an Athletic Bureaucracy can move) took steps to bounce Smith from the team. We hear about it 3 days later on the 20th. Likely action taken in part because tOSU wants to be ahead of the infraction curve.

So in all of this who is the source that dropped the dime on Smith and Why?

To me this is an interesting point to ponder. The motivation of that individual and the individual's identity is an integral part of this story.

Was he interested in "cleaning up" the tOSU program?
-- staving of trouble by leading the AD and HC to a smoldering ember that could become an inferno?
This does not pass muster for me as a rationale. If he knew about it so early, why wait till now?

Was he interested in 15 seconds of fame, earned after revealing what he knew?
Again - I don't really buy that. If you want fame of any duration flashing is a pretty easy way to go. Give out your business card when you drop the dime on TS.

Was he more interested in undercutting the Buckeyes chances at continuing their positive momentum?
Mmm - I just saw 3 lemons and a flashing light.

Smith's infraction wasn't (isn't likely to be) enough to prevent him from enjoying future athletic success in 2005 at tOSU.

But for someone with a grudge, this is great timing.

Who was it? Who is shooting John?

how many tickets does one (1) student need?

Sorry. It was obviously a misphrase. I meant to say that we were only given the option of buying ONE ticket to ONE home game. My ticket was for Penn State. Since I lived in the Stadium, my floor snuck into the Michigan game through the fire exits. If I had been arrested, I went have sent the bill for my fine to Andy Geiger. I had to scalp tickets to Minnesota and (gulp) Michigan State. That cost about $125 total - 93 dollars more than I would have spent if I had been freshman the year before. But, Geiger saw the preseason number 1 ranking with $$$$ in his eyes and decided not to offer full season tickets to freshman - in order to sell more for more money. Thanks Andy Dick, err Geiger.

What I hear many people saying is that they are sick of the issues that have been coming up. I also hear that many people want to "make an example" of athlete's and booster's that fuck up to fix the problem.

This is just kicking the dog people. TS or the booster did not cause the issues of the past. He should not be held accountable. You cannot punish these people for anything other than what they did. It is a lynchmob mentality.

SD, I guess it depends on your expectations.

I attended OSU for five years and got to go to only one game. I have been to four games as an alumni. My father contributed to OSU every year for half a century and went to one game. Many lifelong OSU supporters in Columbus have never been to a game. Sounds to me like you have had better luck than me, my Dad or them.

By the way, Sports Administration is setting these prices with some pretty sophisticated pricing models that take into account all kinds of costs and the overall debt of the program.

The price of tickets has gone up, but so has the quality of a stadium that was falling apart, including your Stadium Dorm. Did you see it a decade ago? A chunk of cement weighing at least twenty pounds fell about five yards from me, just missing a lady sitting nearby.

The number and the quality of a host of other sporting facilities and varsity sporting teams, that rely almost exclusively on OSU football for their support, also has grown.

What should we expect? Where do you want to make the cuts? Or should we blow another $200 million and add another 25000 seats?

If we keep things as they are, should we expect alumni will just pour money into the program without expecting that they are able to attend a game? I mean, after all, they did pay their tuition didn't they?

I, by the way, have been an official booster of the program at many times over the years. Five games SD. Five games.

You are so very fortunate to have the opportunities that you have.

I think some of you are missing the trees or maybe the forest. Acccording to the Dispatch there have been 14 player arrests since 2001. I know some one will pipe in about DUI or disorderly. Add on other self imposed penalties and the total is pretty dismal. There will come a time when management is gonna be looked upon. Tressel, Geiger, etc. As others have posted as long as the wins keep comin anything can be overlooked. Just win baby.

MasterBaiter this is not an osu specific problem is what some people are saying, 'this is the nature of the beast' sounds terrible but it is true. people being arrested and convicted are different things also. that will knock a couple more out.

Let's thing sort themselves out before another person goes off the deep end.

i think what we are seeing here is people who know the prgram and the nature of the beast one side and those who do not on the other. many of geigers supposrts have been around osu a long time and seen what things are and were 'really like' as much as people wanna say the downfall of college sports and the scumbags who run it now, those who know look back on the greatest historic names of all time and realize those guys cheated like hell, its the way it was, its the way it continues to somepoint-things are better now than they were before i would think nearly all of these guys would agree. steps have been taken to curb these activities, getting tittles for cars and proving how they got the funds to pay for them etc.

also im sure you have a job, would your boss get fired you if you got a dui, or was charged with assualt. think about that one.

In fact Mr Otis, I've had a bunch of different jobs where I'd be fired for either. Got some history with the buckeyes, however I'd like to have a news conference where people didn't scratch there heads wondering what was just said.

As far as going off the deep end, that's already been done. One game suspensions or less for some of the crap that has gone on the past few years is pitiful. I'm the one going off the deep end but I can tell you this with certainty on a few of the teams I played on the players would de-commision a fellow player for some of this bullshit.

When I went to school, way way back in the early 70s, all this same stuff was going on without all the stinkin publicity. I watched Bounamici(sp) throw a biker through the big glass window of the head shop next to Papa Joes, our fullback drove a nice green Porsche, went with a drunk Brudzinski to High Street looking for some people who had jumped one of the guys on our floor, had to keep a foosball table between me and a drunk Cousinou(sp) who wanted to fight all 5 foot 7 of me. You've got to be awful naive if you think this is all something new and happens just under Tressel. The main problem is the media now knows this stuff sells and they can't get enough of it.
