QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

True, but Alex Smith's contract is up after this year IIRC. That money is sunk, the 49ers will never get it back. There's no reason to throw away wins (and fan interest, and revenue) on top of it just because you made a bad investment.

Cut your loses and move on.

Maybe Troy doesn't wind up being the answer, but he can't possibly be any worse. If he started the next four years and had one more game comparable to yesterday, he'd be the best QB for the 49ers since Jeff Garcia.

At the very least it would benefit the 49ers to find out if they have their career backup to some hotshot they draft this year, if that's the direction they decide to go.

The 49ers only have about 2 million dollars tied into Alex Smith at this point. He'll be a free agent after this season and it looks like he took an 8 million dollar paycut for this season already.

Prior to yesterday, Troy's last NFL start was way back in Week 17 of 2007, when he lead the Ravens to a win over a Steelers squad that was resting starters. Troy's passer rating that day was 90.2.

I watched that game and if I remember correctly only Polamalu didn't play due to injury. That's a big hit, but still worth noting that he faced the majority of the starters.

Seems like a pretty good deal for the niners to me... Just sayin'.

Sunk cost effect: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunk_costs

For any research junkies out there note the name "Arkes, Hal" in the references. He's at tOSU now but was faculity at OU when I was there for grad school. Very much enjoyed working with Hal. Great guy.

And without looking at the contracts Alex probably would make more money in performance based incentives..you know assuming he could actually play well enough to earn any of those..

The 49er boards are certainly all in.

Can't wait to see how he does with more than 3 practices with the ones. I'd also like to know how many plays they were limited to on Sunday.

9er fans are more than willing to give Troy a shot at this point. I'd say 5% of the fans at most still want Alex Smith and if Troy wins again in 2 weeks against the Rams that number will be zero.

Troy should have a stranglehold on the job for the remainder of the year. Even if he goes out and lays a dud in his next three straight starts and throws 7 INTs, his career trajectory would be on par with Alex Smith's over the previous six years, so really ... what do the 49ers have to lose? I don't think anybody should *give* him a job, but I hope he gets at least a couple opportunities to pick himself up if he fails.

If they stick with Troy they could lose a high position in next year's NFL draft (i.e. maybe they finish something like 8-8 in lieu of 2-14 with Alex Smith).
