True, but Alex Smith's contract is up after this year IIRC. That money is sunk, the 49ers will never get it back. Cut your loses and move on.
Maybe Troy doesn't wind up being the answer, but he can't possibly be any worse. If he started the next four years and had one more game comparable to yesterday, he'd be the best QB for the 49ers since Jeff Garcia.
At the very least it would benefit the 49ers to find out if they have their career backup to some hotshot they draft this year, if that's the direction they decide to go.
