On Sunday, he flashed a strong arm, pocket presence, scrambling ability and, in Singletary's estimation, impressive poise and leadership when the malfunctioning radio in his helmet didn't allow him to hear the play calls during part of the third quarter. Gore and Delanie Walker praised his command of the huddle and, after the game, Smith displayed his charisma during his meeting with the media.

Asked if he was unnerved by the start in front of more than 80,000 fans, he good-naturedly reminded his questioner that he routinely played before 100,000 at Ohio State. And when asked if he's always seen himself as an NFL quarterback, he drew laughs when he replied, "There is no doubt about it. You can check any video game that I play, I'm the starting quarterback." Finally, asked if he thought he should be the Niners' starter, he didn't hesitate to offer the appropriate response, "I would like to say that, but I'm not going to go down that road ... We're going to play it by week and they'll let me know what's going on."

He was confident, polished and in command.

It was a reminder that, as a former Heisman Trophy winner from a college football behemoth, he's not your ordinary third-string NFL quarterback.

On Sunday, he handled an ultra-conservative game plan, a malfunctioning helmet and a seven-point, fourth-quarter deficit with aplomb while making his first start in three years for a team he joined eight weeks ago.

I would offer the arguement that the 49'ers should stick with him since he won even though being rusty as a starter and can only improve. Troy always did come ready to play, I don't think he will ever lose that.
BTW coaches can always design plays to fit a "short" QB if needed.

Yeah right. Both Troy and that Brees guy stand no chance to be successful in this league. Too short!
Now Jamarcus Russel on the other hand, that's a guy to hitch your wagon to. He's got great height!

why do common man and torg hate him? they have bashed him all year and then he plays well sunday. my friend called in and asked if they'd give him some props. they called him an idiot and said troy "got lucky, and proved a team can't be built around him".

i dont understand why such malice for an awesome buckeye

I haven't commented on the game yet, but I watched every minute of it on Sunday to watch him play. I don't want to go overboard in my assement. but he just shows why he is a "gamer" when he gets his opportunities.

One play really stood out to me, and it was like watching him pull magic tricks on Michigan again. The Niners call a screen to Brian Westbrook, and Denver calls the perfect blitz with an OLB crashing Troy. Troy is rolling right into the pressure, so he stops, plants his feet, and fakes a throw down the middle of the field getting the oncoming rusher to jump 3 feet in the air. Troy calmly works his way back to Westbrook and gets 7 or 8 yards on the play. Alex Smith takes that sack or maybe even turns it over.

And that is why he is a gamer. In a practice that play is whistled dead b/c no coaches want their QB's getting lit up. But it's those plays that make Troy Smith. He isn't the quickest QB, but he has good mobility. The thing above all else he brings is his uncanny way of handling the football. He moves players with ball fakes, his eyes, and just a general feel for the pocket.

Whether he sticks as a full-time QB in the league remeains to be seen, but he just gave himself a career on Sunday. At the very least he's a 2nd stringer for years to come which is a lot better than being waived by the Ratbirds.

Pretty simple really...IMO, they're idiots. These are the same talking heads who were pushing for Pryor to be moved to WR after the Purdue debacle.

Took awhile to get things going but 3 offensive TDs in the 4th for a come back win is pretty good for a first start in a few years. Troy has a great shot to take that job and run with it. Go Troy!

Alot of that was the archaic play calling. Run, run, pass, punt. Way too conservative early on. If they opened it up a little earlier, 49ers would have put up 40 points and there wouldnt be 1 single fan doubting Troy's ability.

Cant blame them for being cautious, but you have to see what you've got before its too late. Luckily for San Fran, Troy wasnt to be denied on Sunday. Now all he has to do is get Teddy going on the deep ball and the 49ers will be rolling.
