Singletary hedges when comes to future QB
Well, at least one thing is clear: The 49ers starting quarterback for Week 10 will be named Smith. Following his team's 24-16 win in London, Mike Singletary danced around whether Troy Smith, who was 12 of 19 for 196 yards and a 115 passer rating, had done enough to replace Alex Smith when the 49ers host the Rams in two weeks. The 49ers have a bye on Sunday. Alex Smith missed today's game with a shoulder sprain but his prognosis has him returning in time for St. Louis.
"I'm going to think about taking a break and come back and go for a division game," Singletary said. "Everything else will take care of itself." Later he said, "We're going to continue to go forward with Troy Smith right now. ... As far as Alex Smith is concerned, it's a week-to-week deal. I'll wait and talk to our doctors, trainers, whatever. But we'll make those decisions when we need to."
Still, Singletary is the one who decided to bypass David Carr for Troy Smith and Singletary was quite complimentary of Smith after the game. Smith showed an ability to improvise -- which Singletary likened to Brett Favre -- that hasn't been seen in San Francisco for years. Smith's pitch-and-catch play to Delanie Walker in the fourth quarter, which set up the 49ers' first touchdown, turned the game around for San Francisco.
Walker practiced in place of Vernon Davis -- who was dealing with an ankle injury -- most of the week and he said he and Smith developed a nice rapport during the 49ers' time in Hertfordshire. He said he and Smith would stay after practice to work on plays and talk about different scenarios. "Today he turned to me, and he said, 'Man, if I see you behind them, if I see you have even a step on them, I'm throwing you the ball,'" Walker said. "And I told him, 'Throw it. I'll make these plays for you.' And he did that."
