QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

February 28, 2010
Harbaugh: "Troy Smith is a Raven"

Ravens coach John Harbaugh continued to repeat the organization's stance on back-up quarterback Troy Smith this week at the NFL Combine, saying he expects Smith to remain with the Ravens in 2010.

"I see him still with the team," Harbaugh said. "Troy Smith is a Raven."

Smith, a Heisman trophy-winning quarterback at Ohio State, caused a minor controversy at the end of last season when his agent, Ralph Cindrich, stated on Twitter that the quarterback was requesting a trade because he wanted the opportunity to start somewhere. The Ravens have said they plan to keep Smith as Joe Flacco's back-up.

Harbaugh did say the team would be open to making a move if it would benefit them, but it's unclear if Smith would have any real trade value. In limited NFL action, Smith has completed 54 percent of his passes and posted a 79.7 quarterback rating.

As a rookie in 2007, he started two games for the Ravens at the end of the year. He completed 32-of-60 passes for 370 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 48 yards in those two games, and did not throw an interception. The Ravens lost to the Seahawks 27-6 in his first career start, but beat the Steelers 27-21 in the final game of the season.

"I think he?s really a good quarterback," Harbaugh said. "I think Troy can play quarterback in this league as a starter. That?s why we like him as our backup because at some point in time we?re going to need a guy to win two, three, four games for us if Joe gets hurt. Although at the same time, I think we understand Troy?s desire to be a starter. If something would work out where it?s beneficial to the Ravens from our perspective and it gives him a chance to do that down the road somewhere, then we?re interested in doing that. But Troy is our backup quarterback at this point and I don?t think we?re going to change that unless it benefits our football team.?

The flip side is that there are many teams with horrible QBs, and many of us would like to see a QB with potential to get a chance, as opposed to being the backup to a caveman.
I understand that...especially as a fan of Troy. But, I don't fault the ratbirds (as much as I despise them) for saying they want to hold on to him. In football, you're often an injury away from tumbling out of the playoffs, so having capable guys to provide depth is a real luxury. If Troy is an NFL QB, he'll get the chance someday. The best thing for him to do is to continue to work on his game, stay in shape and hope that chance comes around.

Lets be honest with ourselves, he hasn't really showcased the ability to be a starting QB in the NFL (yet). His best chance was back in Glendale in 2007 and he flubbed that (granted, with some help) and at the combine, when he clearly didn't put in the effort needed to wow folks. After the scUM game that year, he was being mentioned as a top-10 pick...he didn't capatilize. I've heard a lot of (reputable) people say he rested on his laurels after winning the Heisman. He admitted himself he hit the banquet circuit a little too hard. Since graduating to the NFL, he's looked pretty decent in the few chances he got, but he hasn't had a big season when the starter went down and cashed in (Matt Cassell) and he doesn't have all the physical tools that make GMs drool (Matt Schaub). His best attribute is that his teammates like him and he's shown in the past he can be a leader. Maybe that eventually translates to NFL success, maybe it doesn't. Time will tell.

And in the meantime, Troy is drawing a nice paycheck for not getting thrown to the turf every Sunday. Good for him, I say.

The Ratturd 3rd stringer was John Beck, who is so bad it defies imagination (think Derek Anderson with less of that accuracy and mobility he has  ) That said, I agree with the above...they'd be stupid to drop him unless they make a killing in return.

You expect a Harbaugh to do favors for someone who beat Michigan like a drum?

what the hell does that mean?

Pretty sure it means any team can sign Troy but would owe Baltimore a fifth round pick.

Surprising, b/c most thought they'd tender a second or third round pick making it more expensive (pick-wise) to sign Troy. I'm not sure how the rules work in regards to tendering players, but the Browns could get themselves a great local kid, who actually wants to be in Cleveland, for a 5th when we have 12 picks.....seems like an easy decesion.

I'm a Bills fan but I would own that authentic jersey the instant it went on sale!!!!! Brady better give up that #10 though.
